There is something romantic about steam trains. Though in the days of steam when the train went through a tunnel you made sure the windows in the coach were closed otherwise you got smoke coming in and soot all over the place.

Hi El, yes she did. Handed over her gift and bouncing around in no time. Granny went for a hot cuppa!
No its not good weather for window cleaners.
I dont imagine it was fun getting covered in soot! Although the last train journey i had, recently from Stirling,  i would have welcomed it, rather than 4 hyper teenagers sitting next to us , for 50 very long minutes

Skylark, I'm glad your GD quickly warmed up and enjoyed herself

I remember the days when I was young and we would go on the steam train to London from Gloucester for the day. There are a couple of tunnels on the way. The coaches were split into compartments, probably seating 8 in each compartment. So when we went through the tunnels my father would quickly close the windows so that the smoke didn't get in, then open them once we came out of the tunnel. I do remember one time when we did get smoke coming in and my mother wiping the soot off our faces.

You must have been glad to get to the end of that journey and escape from those teenagers

Hi Velvet

Skylark, the BBC has already confirmed that the 5th series of Call the Midwife has been commissioned to be shown next year. It's BBC1's most popular programme and can get higher ratings than Eastenders (though the live episodes of Eastenders the other week displaced Call the Midwife). And while it continues to get those ratings, the BBC are unlikely to drop it.

Skylark, I'm glad your granddaughter heated up quickly and enjoyed the party.

Velvet, how was your afternoon tea, last week?

El, that's good news about Call The Midwife being commissioned for another series.

Evening Yogi

We didn't make it on the birthday Wednesday as the bosses arthritis was really playing up so it was a day at home. Had to cancel and it was going to be a surprise - Gleneagles. Had a run up to Perth on the Friday though to sort a car out but it was just up and down. They'll be plenty more opportunities though touch wood. We got her a big footstool which she instantly guessed but it's gone down a treat

Hope all is well with you, PB and the family

That's a shame, Velvet, but maybe you can do it when the better weather comes and perhaps her joints will be less painful then.

Glad your mum loved the footstool.

All is well and PB is doing great - apart from her Sean Batty love.

Aww, so sorry I missed you last night, Summer.

Good morning everyone.

We've had snow overnight! Not too much, but it is lying. Main roads are clear though.

I forgot to mention last night, I finally finished my jigsaw.

Annoyingly, there were two pieces missing, with two pieces from another jigsaw included instead.

Waiting in for a parcel today, it's a multi region DVD player.

We decided to replace the old and rather erratic DVD player in the livingroom, so that PB can watch Disney films etc when she's a bit older.

Mr Yogi recently bought me a multi region one for the bedroom so that I could finally watch my favourite film on DVD, as it is only available on Region 1, and we decided to get the same model for downstairs.

Have a good day everyone.

Good morning everyone, a bit showery here this morning.

Good move Yogi, I do wish they wouldn't do this Region 1 Region 2 thing it's very irritating but you can watch so much more now, I wish I'd gone that route but it's not worth replacing mine.

I am just about to run the car in for a service and MOT, so I hope all goes well.

Enjoy your day everyone

Good morning everyone

Sunny here though a possibility of showers at some point in the day. Cold out there, but no snow. Should start getting warmer from tomorrow so spring may soon be starting.

Yogi, did you go for a replacement jigsaw as you seem to have gone ahead with the one you had?

Did you lnow that it's possible to charge the region for the DVD player in your computer though only 5 times including the original region setting. On my old computer ~I had 2 DVD players so it was possible to set one of them to Region 1. .Sometimes it's possible to get a Region 0 DVD and that's region free, but those aren't easy to find. There are other ways of circumventing the region on your DVD player but not legally.

I decided to go ahead and do the jigsaw because I had purchased it in a charity shop (brand new, still sealed) so I couldn't provide the name of the retailer and receipt, which are required if you want a replacement puzzle.

I did read somewhere that it was possible to change the region on the dvd player on a computer, but it was limited to 5 times.

Squiggle, good luck with the MOT. Mine is due later this month.

MOT not going well the car is going to need some welding and the rear brakes are leaking they reckon it will cost ÂĢ500 oh dear.

One way of working out the direction without a compass was using an analogue watch (with an hour hand and a minute hand)

Habe the watch horizontal, point the hour hand towards the sun, note the position of 12 o'clock (the red line in the picture). South is halfway between the 12 and the position of the sun. Only' an estimate and doesn't take into account the fact that it might be BST or GMT, and not much use if cloudy or nighttime.

That's the way I'm thinking now EL.  As you know my eldest grandson has a young family and the car would be a great first car for him.  I have my eye on an automatic brand new from Suzuki which is less than ÂĢ6,000 and for the peace of mind I think this could be the way to go.  Big decision though so I am consulting all the family.

Squiggle, if you go that way at least your car will be still with your family. I've never driven an automatic but I understand that if you are switching over from having driven a manual car for years, you will find driving feels different in that you no longer control which gear the car is in. If you are used to driving manual, there may be someone else here who can say just how different.

El Loro

I used to drive an automatic EL and I loved it.  When we had the Motability car after my hubby's stroke we plumped for a Vauxhall Astra Estate with plenty of room for his wheelchair, mobility scooter, walker or whatever he needed and that was automatic.  I had to get used to a manual gearbox again when I got my Mazda but I prefer the automatic.

Squiggs I dunno how old your car is but the boss had her Mk 1 Golf for eighteen years and it was still pretty decent. Suzuki's are meant to have bulletproof reliability so something to consider     Sky, hope the evening goes well and you managed a fine Kim and Aggie impersonation. Bit of snow this morn but North Lanarkshire Councils underground heating seems to be working now. El, hope you've not been crunching numbers all day and Yogi, hope all is well

Have a nice evening ye all. It's Gold Rush night

I can't complain velvet my car is 25 years old and it has been a life saver for the last 5 and half years since I lost my hubby.  It's good to know about Suzuki's the car I am going to test drive is an Alto, it's obviously very basic but that doesn't trouble me, one of my favourite ever cars was an original mini and they really were very basic and I loved that one.  If I like it it will be nice not to worry about MOT's for 3 years.  My grandson is coming with me.

You may want to check out reviews of the latest Alto though and check that the size of its boot is adequate for your needs.

I've been busy checking reviews all afternoon.  As for boot size, you may recall that I haven't really been able to use my boot on my present car as the strut is broken so I have really been managing without a boot all this time.  The Alto is a hatchback which must be a big improvement and although the actual boot is tiny the back seats fold down which I think will prove at least as adequate as what I have now.  But thank you for you concern
