An Italian councillor has suggested that fish and chips mat have been introduced into the UK by Italian immigrants,

http://www.theguardian.com/wor...la-european-classics

His argument is somewhat tenous. The above article mentions Dickens' Oliver Twist. So I did a search online on the novel. The closest I found was this extract from chapter 26:

"Near to the spot on which Snow Hill and Holborn Hill meet, opens, upon the right hand as you come out of the City, a narrow and dismal alley, leading to Saffron Hill. In its filthy shops are exposed for sale huge bunches of second-hand silk handkerchiefs, of all sizes and patterns; for here reside the traders who purchase them from pick-pockets. Hundreds of these handkerchiefs hang dangling from pegs outside the windows or flaunting from the door-posts; and the shelves, within, are piled with them. Confined as the limits of Field Lane are, it has its barber, its coffee-shop, its beer-shop, and its fried-fish warehouse. It is a commercial colony of itself: the emporium of petty larceny: visited at early morning, and setting-in of dusk, by silent merchants, who traffic in dark back-parlours, and who go as strangely as they come. Here, the clothesman, the shoe-vamper, and the rag-merchant, display their goods, as sign-boards to the petty thief; here, stores of old iron and bones, and heaps of mildewy fragments of woollen-stuff and linen, rust and rot in the grimy cellars."

There's nothing there about Italy or Italians, The extract would position Field Lane (which doesn't seem to exist anymore) at close to the southern end of Saffron Street. The opposite end of Saffron Street is Clerkenwell Road. What is known as Little Italy is tradtionally the triangle marked by Clerkenwell Road, Farringdon Road and Rosebery Avenue. But that triangle cannot include Field Lane.

Though there is mention of Saffron Street in the Sherlock Holmes story "The Adventure of the Six Napoleons". This extract - Lestrade talking to Holmes:

“We have an inspector who makes a specialty of Saffron Hill and the Italian quarter. Well, this dead man had some Catholic emblem round his neck, and that, along with his colour, made me think he was from the South. Inspector Hill knew him the moment he caught sight of him. His name is Pietro Venucci, from Naples, and he is one of the greatest cut-throats in London."

Intriguiging, but hardly convincing.

How's your day been?

My day has been quite relaxing. Bought some new Egyptian cotton bath and hand towels and had a visit from middle son. Other than that, it's been a lazy day.

I did do some housework in the morning, I haven't been totally lazy!

My IPad isn't pinging when I get emails! I think I need to switch it off and on again.

No broadband and no tv would have been horrible! What did you do to relieve the boredom, did you listen to the radio or do you like to read books?

Maybe I should buy a radio too, just in case of emergencies.

Are you having any treats tonight?

I have been a bit naughty and eaten some liquorice allsorts.

Hubby asked me to throw a few to him, but as I threw them over, Keira jumped into the air and snaffled a couple. I did hand him a few more.
