I don't know what prompted her to mention BB, I think she just likes a natter.

I agree with you about the ratings and hope they plummet!

Middle son and DiL have gone home now, we had a lovely chat with them.

Quiet in the morning and busy in the afternoon sounds like a good balance. When will the back to school haircut madness start, is it soon?

Did you son come for tea?

Hopefully, they'll spread it out so you don't get all the little darlings all at once!

No they didn't come for tea tonight, just a cuppa and a biccie.

Son brought me some filter wool (that's what I call it) for the filter in my fish tank, and he approved of my new white light for the fish (the old one is kaputt).

Yogi19
Lol he must still be very fond of his fish tank does he have one at his house too?

Ha, I wish! Every year they all turn up at the last possible moments and we get yelled at because we can't fit them all in. I'm already mentally preparing myself for my fake smiles

We've got who do you think you are? on, it's tamzin outhwaite, it's quite interesting
~Sparkling Summer~

Yes, he has a big tank for his fish. His isn't for tropical fish although he used to have them, he has saltwater fish now, which are very pretty colours and beautiful corals too.

I hope you are practicing that fake smile really well, as it sounds like you will be using it a lot.

I'm not really watching anything atm, but the tv is on in the background.

I've taken my last steroid of the day and now I need to wait 30-60 minutes before I can eat anything.  My toffee meringue is still in the fridge and it is calling to me.

Tamzin is in Italy!

I have a clock right beside me, and only 10 minutes to wait.

The meds are great, now that they've kicked in properly. I'll be on them until mid November, so I can relax for a while, knowing I'm not likely to have a big flare up. Downside is, the steroids make me eat, A LOT!! That 12lbs I lost is rapidly going back on.

Lucky Tamsin! I have put Italy on our 'places to visit' list when hubby retires.

She likes her comfort! I'm glad her upset tummy has settled. Had she been eating something dodgy again? I warned hubby to keep a close eye on Keira when he lets her out for her last wee tonight, as there were a few slugs on the path when I went to lock the garage, and I don't want her eating those!

Cake was yummy, and calorific.

Are your slugs huge too? They seem to be turning into mutants here this year

I'm glad you enjoyed your cake

Pretty girl with disgusting eating habits.

Yes, the slugs are big ones! I don't like slugs, they are slimy and squidgy.

Good morning everyone, lovely singing EL - I love the sound of folk singers, it's a sound that is difficult to describe.  I have no idea what Jean is singing of course.  How lovely to hear Auld Lang Syne, a proper version.

I don't believe the moon is really a banana or even made of green cheese, but I do wonder whether these funny little creatures might live there

Enjoy your day everyone, Summer I hope the back to school rush hasn't started just yet.

squiggle

Squiggle, you could be right about the Clangers

I agree about the best folk singers. There is something timeless about their singing which draws you in, and a sense of community. Like you, I don't understand the words that Jean Redpath was singing (for the most part) but her voice has a gentle lyrical sound to it which is very attractive.

Squiggle, these are the full lyrics to the first song Jean sang, which is called The Gaberlunzie Man and also known as The Beggar Laddie.

The Gaberlunzie Man   Traditional, Child Appendix

O a beggar, a beggar cam’ ower yon lea,
And mony fine tales he hae telt tae me,
Sayin’ guid wife fae ye’r charity
Will ye lodge a beggar man,
Lal lal tee too roo ree.

The nicht was cauld and the carl was wat,
And doon ahint the ingle he sat,
And ma daughters shoother he gang tae clap
And aye he ranted an sang
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

O if I was black as I am white,
As the snaw that lies on yonder dyke,
I wad dress mysel’ some beggar-like,
And awa wi’ ye I’d gang
Laddie tae ma too roo ree.

O lassie, O lassie ye’r ower young
And ye haena get the cant o’ the beggin’ tongue,
No ye haena get the cant o’ the beggin’ tongue
And wi me ye canna gang,
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

O I’ll bend my back and I’ll crook ma knee
And I’ll pit a black patch ower ma e’e,
And a beggar’s lassie they’ll tak’ me tae be,
Syne awa’ wi ye I’ll gang,
Laddie tae ma too roo ree.

Then atween the twa they made a plot
Tae rise twa hours afore the cock
And sae cannily they slippit the lock
And awa through the fields they ran,
Laddie tae ma too roo ree.

In the morning time the auld wife rose
And at her leisure pit on her claise;
Tae the servants bed she then did go
Tae spier for the silly puir man,
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

She’s gaen tay the bed where the beggar lay,
But the strae was cauld and he was away.
And she’s clappit her hands crying “Welladay,
Is there ony o’ oor guid gear gane?”
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

Some ran tae the coffer and some tae the kist,
But naethin’ was awa’ that could be missed,
And she danced her lane, crying, “Praise be the blessed
I’ve lodged an honest auld man.”
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

Ah some did rin and some did ride
Tae find the place fa’ they did hide,
But they couldna find fa they did bide
As in the brae they lay.
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

When years had passed some twa or three
That same beggar carl cam’ ower the lea,
Saying “Guid wife for ye’r charity
Will ye lodge a silly puir man?”
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.

O no, O no, I’ll not lodge again
For I ance had a dochter ain o ma ain,
But awa’ wi a beggin’ man she’s gane
And I dinna ken whence na whar.
Laddie tae ma too roo ree.

He said,’Yonder she’s comin’ ower yon lea
Wi mony a fine tale tae tell tae ye,
She’s a baby donlin’ at her knee
And another yen coming hame.
Lassie tae ma too roo ree.”

“O yonder she’s comin’ tae your bower,
In silk and satin and mony a flower.”
And the guid wife rose and she blessed the hour
She’d gane wi’ the beggin’ man.
Laddie tae ma too roo ree

I won't translate all of it but the gist of the song is a beggar man calls on a house looking for charity and the family takes him in for the night. He talks to the daughter of the house and she falls under his spell. In the morning, when the family wakes, they find the beggar man gone but are pleasantly surprised he hasn't stolen anything.

However, they soon discover that the daughter has gone with him.

A few years later, another beggar man comes to their door, but the lady of the house refuses to help as she says the last beggar man took their daughter.

The beggar man tells her to look over at the hill and see her daughter approaching, with one child and another on the way. Turns out the beggar man was actually rich and the daughter is in silks and satins, and the mother then blesses the day her daughter went off with the beggar man.
