Good morning everyone.

More rain forecast for today, although the sun is trying to break through atm.

El, don't you just love the topics in here - random and varied is what we do best.

Squiggle, I like that clip, and the Empire State Building is beautiful when it is all lit up. I loved the film mentioned in the clip, An Affair To Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

Have a good day everyone.

Squiggle, I resaw Sleepless in Seattle again not that long ago and the ending is sweet.

It's a sad reflection on Hollywood that as actresses get older most of them find it harder to get the top roles in films. Meg Ryan is no exception. But she's not disappearing from films. She has started directing her first film which is called Ithaca scheduled for release right at the end of next year. It could be a film to watch out for as this is a plot summary I've seen:

In a small town in California's San Joaquin Valley, 14-year-old Homer Macauley is determined to be the best and fastest bicycle telegraph messenger anyone has ever seen. His older brother has gone to war, leaving Homer to look after his widowed mother, his older sister and his 4-year-old brother, Ulysses. And so it is that as spring turns to summer, 1942, Homer Macauley delivers messages of love, hope, pain... and death... to the good people of Ithaca. And Homer Macauley will grapple with one message that will change him forever - from a boy into a man. Based on Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Saroyan's 1943 novel, The Human Comedy, ITHACA is the quintessential wartime tale of the Home Front. It is a coming-of-age story about the exuberance of youth, the sweetness of life, the sting of death and the modesty and sheer goodness that lives in each and every one of us.

She is also in the film, presumably as the mother. Also in the cast, but no detail on which role, is none other than Tom Hanks.

If you get the chance, it's worth watching Love Affair (1939) (Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer) - An Affair to Remember is a renake of that. Maria Ouspenskaya plays Boyer's grandmother. She only appears shortly during the first half of the film but her performance is sublime and her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress was truly justified.

The service at our church this morning was to commemorate the start of WW1 and those who fell. It was led in part by representatives of the army, navy and the airforce. One of them spoke of some of his ancestors who had fought then and afterwards members of the congregation were invited to speak of people in their families who had been involved.

First hymn was Now Thank we all our God.

The second hymn was "Fading away like stars of the morning". The version we used has the text on this link:

http://www.hymnary.org/text/up...ng?sort=text-authors

The theatrical version of "War Horse" has a different version wrtiten for it but the same music.

We finally had "We'll meet again" which of course is not a hymn and is associated with WW2, but was chosen as being appropriate at the end of the service.

lol at the clever parrot making itself some tail feathers.

Moonie, you have been very busy today. I've done some housework, made a pot of lentil soup and a beef stew for tonight's dinner, and started reading a book on my new kindle.

El, that sounds like a fitting service to commemorate the start of WW1 and to remember those who gave their lives for this country.

Yogi19

Yogi, it was a fitting service.

In our church, on the first Sunday each month, we don't have a communion service at that time but a service which is quite often led by lay people rather than clergy. Today it was led in part by a woman who won't be at church next Sunday. She, along with her family, will be at a convention in Manchester next weekend.

http://www.dwcon.org/

She's been in previous years. She participates in the events and is panicking as she has lost the text of the part she was taking at the event. In a previous year she entered one of the events. When the award was announced she was disappointed not to get a mention little realising that the judges had been so impressed that they had given her the main award of the convention instead.

Busy bees in here today I see

It's important to honour the memories of our fallen heroes may they be resting in peace

I love sleepless in Seattle and I'm now looking forward to the above mentioned meg Ryan movie. I always liked her pairing with Tom Hanks
An affair to remember is a great film, I hope it's shown on TV sometime soon

Lentil soup is one of my favourites, but then again, I like most soups.

I'm reading Nadine Dorrie's first novel called The Four Streets. It's about Liverpool in the 1950/1960's and it is quite good - better than I expected.
