Squiggle's story about wrens reminded me of the old farthing which ceased to be issued in 1956. They were equal to a quarter of the pre-decimal penny (farthing derives from fourthing). On their reverse was:

El, I brought a set of the old coinage, from somewhere or other and I think there was a farthing in that.

Also a half crown, threepenny bit, a sixpence, old penny and halfpenny

Aww, I wish I had one of those coins. The wren is so cute.

I need to google, I want one of those sets.

Years ago I found and kepr an 1869 Victorian penny. It is very worn which would seriously diminish its value, probably about £10. But it is one of the rarer Bristish coins. In very good condition it would have been worth around £3,000.

 

Moonie's 1929 penny in mint condition is worth about £40. If it had been an 1933 one then that is as rare as they get and would be worth a fortune.

 

I did that too moonie.  I showed to my daughter and grandsons and they were fascinated by them.  The size and weight of them is so impressive.  The threepenny 'joey' was my favourite along with the sixpence, I have an old silver threepenny bit too somewhere.

 

Is your Victorian penny a bun penny EL, I have one that I inherited from my hubby, I will have to check the date.  I think I have a really thick one from 1759 or something like that too.

Squiggle, yes it's a "bun" penny. Those issued between 1860 and 1894 are of that type.

A 1759 coin is a lot older than any I have.

 

Again I inherited the older one from my hubby, no idea where he got it from and no idea where it is in the house at the moment either Probably in a 'safe place' so it could be years before I find it.

 I'm always putting things in 'safe places' then forgetting where the safe place is.

I have just finished watching the Cranford Christmas Special again, I never tire of it, I shall probably watch it all over again at Christmas
