Slim, some films on the Talking Pictures tv channel during the coming week to comment on.
On Wednesday at 2.55 in the morning is "Three Came Home" (1950) which starred Claudette Colbert. A serious film adapted from the memoirs of Agnes Newton Keith. She, her husband and their young son lived in North Borneo in the 1930s. Then in 1941 the Japanese invaded and they were captured, imprisoned and were then separated with her husband taken away. Much of the film is then about her and her son. The colonel in charge of her camp was fluent in English, had read a book written be her about life in Borneo and treats her well. She does not get treated well by the guards and suffers when the colonel is away though he does return. The film ends with the Allied troops landing, finding that the Japanese have abandoned the camp, and in sue course, as the title says, three came home.
It's a very good film and worth watching.
On Thursday at 5.25 in the morning is a short film called "Murder at the Grange" (1952). It's very low budget, was originally made as an episode for a tv series that never got shown. It was a police detective series starring Patrick Barr. The reason for mentioning it is because it features Tod Slaughter. He was known for him hamming in Victorian melodramas which toured this country, some of which he filmed. This was made near the end of his career and is a chance to see what he was like in a short film rather than having to watch a whole feature film of his
Also on Thursday at 18.50 is "Small Hotel" (1957) which is a fairly short comedy with Gordon Harker near the end of his career as a crafty waiter at the Jolly Fiddler Hotel. Reading about it I think you'll enjoy it. There are also appearances by the likes of Irene Handl, Dora Bryan, Francis Matthews (who was Paul Temple in the old tv series) and Billie Whitelaw.
