I remember the pea soupers of the 1950s , they were so thick…and yellow …. that at one point the bus stopped and we all had to walk home from school . It was really weird , you literally couldn’t see your hand in front of your face ….and very disorienting….youd  start at one side of the road and end up on the other side .

The Great Smog of London in 1952 was the worst air pollution event in this country, lead to the Clean Air Act in 1956 to reduced the risk of that happening again.

My mother told me years ago two weather related items. The time when there was so much snow that the army was called in to dig trenches for people to be able to walk along to get to work. She experienced that before she married.

The other was one that her mother told me. There was the time when a woman was out walking, then extremely strong gust of wind came and blew the woman into dust. That one is somewhat unlikely

It's very grey & still here El ...quite nice for a walk.

Stay warm folks!

Whilst driving this morning, there was a grey car behind me, matching the colour of the road and the sky, there was a a slight drizzle, and that car had no lights on

Good morning everyone

Cloudy here at present though could get brighter during the day.
Rain and wind forecast Tuesday/Wednesday then forecast to become sunny and cold from Thursday for some days.,
There is a chance of heavy snow on the night of Monday the 6th but at present there's a 10% chance of that happening.

I hope everyone has a good day

Slim, two films to mention on the Talking Pictures tv channel during the coming week.

Tomorrow a minor 1964 British comedy "Crooks in Cloisters" at 13.00. Crooks set up business in a disused monastery off the Cornish coast as pretend monks, Cast includes Ronald Fraser, Wilfrid Brambell, Bernard Cribbins and Barbara Windsor.
I saw it years ago and didn't like it.

On Friday at 16.55 is "The Arsenal Stadium Mystery" (1939) . Charity match between Arsenal and the fictional The Trojans at the Highbury stadium. The new star player for The Trojans collapses and dies. Inspector Slade (Leslie Banks) called in to investigate what is a murder.
The football match action was a match played for the film between the real Arsenal team and Brentford players as The Trojans. I think it's safe to assume that none of real football players were responsible.

By the way, the director of "The Arsenal Stadium Mystery" was Thorold Dickinson. His next film was "Gaslight" (1940) which was remade 4 years later in the States (the better known version). That's the origin of the colloquialism gaslighting.

It's mostly cloudy here El...ideal for the gulls apparently, judging by the noise
I doubt we'll get any snow... how depressing

Take care folks

I don't mind the sound of the first film you mention El, but have a feeling I may have seen it before.
I've never been much of a Barbara Windsor appreciator tbh...

Not sure about the second film...Football doesn't exactly fill me with excitement... not even a little bit. I do like a good murder mystery though...so that's a definite maybe

Thanks El

Re the first film, I wasn't a fan of Ronald Fraser, he's the lead in the film

Re "The Arsenal Stadium Mystery", there's only a few minutes of actual football during the film so shouldn't put you off
The director had intended to make a follow up film called "The Denham Studio Mystery" which would have included footage from "I, Claudius". That is possibly the most famous film never to have been completed. "The Denham Studio Mystery" didn't get made.

Good morning everyone

Fairly cloudy here, dry and mild,
Mild tomorrow and Wednesday though rain and gusty winds.
Cold from Thursday onwards - BBC has it getting a bit warmer about a week later, some sites showing cold for the rest of the month, Met Office forecast only covers for 7 days.

I hope everyone has a good day

When I make an online payment on my Lloyds bank account I always get a message about is this a scam. Purely for information, I don;t have to do anything other than confirm the payment. Seems a sensible precaution.
However I get the same message when transferring money between my Lloyds current account and my Lloyds savings account which seems a bit pointless, both being in my name and the same branch

BBC article re "Father Brown" with interviews with each of the five regular cast:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacen...ther-brown-series-12

Re the mention of the parish church of Blockley - that's The Church of St Peter and St Paul and is a C of E church. G K Chesterton was a Roman Catholic so his character Father Brown was also Roman Catholic.

Slim, This Sunday's weather could be on interest to you. BBC has rain for you all day. However there's another weather site which has it colder than shown by the BBC with a 37% chance of snow much of the day with 45 cm of snow which will stay for a week or so

I saw it on this site, Slim
https://www.metcheck.com/
It's not that reliable though, does different model runs during the day and comes up with different results. So for that day, they reduced the amount of snow to 15cm and now it's showing virtually no snow.
As for their 180 day forecast, that's meaningless

Good morning everyone and a Happy New Year

Raining here this morning, not as gusty as yesterday, temperature going down throughout the day, cold from tonight.
Some weather sites forecasting 2 foot of snow on Monday though Met Office and BBC sleet/rain.

There's a weather system coming from the south on Sunday. It depends as to where the northern part of that gets to. The northern part gets the snow as it's next to the cold air from the north.
That's why weather sites are showing different forecasts.

And a Happy New Year to you, Slim
