Back in November I mentioned a film "Sudden Fear" (1952), a film noir starring Joan Crawford, Jack Palance and Gloria Grahame. I got around to watching it yesterday evening,

A good film noir. Crawford relatively likeable for a Crawford film as a wealthy playwright is involved in casting of her new play, Palance does an audition, though Crawford declines to accept him for the role so he leaves the theatre. Later she goes on a train journey and Palance just happens to get on the train and joins her, A rapid romance and they marry. Anyone with a knowledge of 1950s films will know that Palance played baddies at that time and so would know that the Palance character had ulterior motives, And so he did,
The last part of the film is the strongest part and is very stylish, with the cinematography being a bit reminiscent of silent German expressionist films in the use of camera angles, and shadows. Film was in black and white, colour would not have the same effect. The cinematographer was Charles Lang, one of the best, and made many classics (including "The Ghost and Mrs Muir") Lang excelled in the use of chiaroscuro, light and shade.

On a trivia point was one the scriptwriters was was Lenore Coffee and the film was adapted from a story by Edna Sherry

Crawford, Palance and Lang were nominated for Oscars but didn't win.

I'd recommend it, Slim,
The film noir genre has its roots in silent German expressionist films. The likes of Fritz Lang and Billy Wilder came from Germany and were influential on film noir. (Fritz Lang and Charles Lang were not related). The film is a good example of the genre. The end section is an interesting use of sound as well to create tension.
Incidentally, in 1924 Alfred Hitchcock was sent by Gainsborough Pictures to studios near Berlin to work as assistant director and art director on a silent British/German film called "The Blackguard" and that experience was influential on his subsequent career. I don't think that's on Youtube though there are little extracts from it.

According to the Sun, the matches in the last 16 stage in the Euros are to be shown on these channels: The first each day being the earlier one (KO 17.00) and the second the later one (KO 20.00). ITV had first choice for the stage and for the semi-finals, BBC for the quarter-finals. BBC yet to update their tv schedules, ITV seems to have.

  • June 29 - Switzerland vs Italy - BBC
  • June 29 - Germany vs Denmark - ITV

I don't suppose the Beeb mind too much about ITV getting the larger slice of the pie, as they've got Wimbledon to fill their schedule with ...another borefest!

I wouldn't mind so much if there were decent alternatives for those of us that don't enjoy watching sport, but most of what they show is just trash   IMO

An indication of how the BBC has declined is the amount of drama on BBC One in the lunchtime slot from Mondays to Fridays. There was the time where "Doctors" (30 minutes) was shown each day followed by various dramas (typically 40 minutes).
Then the 40 minute dramas were restricted to just Fridays, "Doctors" not shown on Fridays, and by the end of the year "Doctors" will be no more."Doctors" used to be a lot better than it is now and was important in providing an outlet for writers. It has serious implications for drama writers in this country.
So 350 minutes per week cut down to 40 minutes.

That's a marked difference El

My Dad has mentioned how disappointed he is with 'Doctors' these days...he's been watching it since it began.
I wonder what they'll show in it's place...

I had watched "Doctors" for quite some time but gave up after it had deteriorated. There was the introduction of another doctor. I think the actress who played her was better than the quality of the character she played. Would have been more appropriate in one of those Carry On films. I think she's gone now. And the decision to kill off Karen made it pointless to carry on watching it. In the programme she was married to Rob (the main policeman) and their relationship was the strongest part of the programme. It was the actress's wish that this happened  as she wanted a break rather than the producers. The actor and actress playing the couple did win the best partnership award in the Soap Awards both in the first year and the last year.

Yes, I remember when Karen was killed off...Dad was none too pleased either...I think he may have had a crush on her

It's a shame that the BBC put PC & Woke above ability to act...which in my view is why many shows deteriorate when new characters are brought in.

First picture is of the Blitz in London.
Second picture isn't described but would be of the event where dinosaurs were wiped out as a result of the asteroid strike.
Last photo is of the volcanic destruction of Pompeii.

Many a lego brick have I trodden on during my years of being a Mum ...Ouch!

Clever designs....and yes, darker subject matter than one would expect to see...done by adults rather than children obviously.
I think the pirate ship is the darkest my boys would have built

Slim, little much new on the Talking Pictures tv channel during the coming week. There is a documentary on the films of Boris Karloff late Wednesday evening, Looing at the imdb article about this, it's a very good documentary covering his film career from 1919 to 1968. Also refers to a Spanish film called "The Spirit of the Beehive" which was made in 1973. In that film, a young girl sees the Boris Karloff film "Frankenstein" and she and her sister go off to find the monster. I've never seen that film but it is supposed to be very good.

Film 4 is showing "Norhing But the Best"(1964) on Thursday at 11.00am. It's a British black comedy, which has been described as "Room at the Top" reconstructed for laughs. Stars Alan Bates and Denholm Elliott, It's highly regarded by critics, though it;s not a film I've seen as I don;t think it would appeal to me,

BBC Two has "North by Northwest" this afternoon which you will have seen before. On a point of trivia, it was the 6th time Leo G Carroll was in an Alfred Hitchcock film ("Rebecca", "Suspicion", "Spellbound", "The Paradine Case" and "Strangers on a Train" being the first five).

I would be amazed if you hadn't seen "North by Northwest", Slim

I didn't mention that the Talking Pictures tv channel is showing "Yield to the Night" (1956) during the coming week. Not a film I've ever seen and wouldn't want to even if it's well regarded and shows that Diana Dors could act It's unrelentingly grim and about a woman awaiting her execution.
Film was directed by J Lee Thompson. His previous film also starred Diana Dors - "An Alligator Named Daisy". A minor comedy but you would prefer it.

I'm sure I've seen that film El ...it must have been shown again on tv later than 1956
Definitely haven't seen the second film...think I'd remember that one

I'm reasonably certain that "Yield to the Night" has been shown on television, Slim, There is also "Dance with a Stranger" (1985) which was partially financed by Film Four so has been shown a few times over the years.

Back in the days I was at senior school, the school had I think 4 houses (not that it was a boarding school). The house I was in was the winning house at the end of my first year, So there was a party for my house. A film was shown and that was "An Alligator Named Daisy", a harmless film but nothing more than watchable

3rd day of the 4 day cricket match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan.
Gloucestershire were all out for 179 runs in their first innings.
Glamorgan were all out for 197 runs in their first innings so an 18 run lead.
What make this match unusual is that Gloucestershire' second innings has just finished with a declaration of  610 runs for 5 so quite a change from the first innings,

I hadn't spotted that the match was not at Gloucestershire's main ground but at Cheltenham College. Matches are played there every year for about 2 weeks, mainly of the short format.

Update on that cricket match between Gloucestershire and Glamorgan. Glamorgan got to 592 with one ball left of the match to go so had drawn level.. If the last ball got 0 runs, then the match would be a draw as neither side had won. If one or more runs were scored then Glamorgan would win.
But Glamorgan only had one wicket left, and Gloucestershire got that wicket with the final ball.
So the result was a tie, which is rare in 4 day cricket.

Weather forecast for Wimbledon is very poor. Might be a very short period where play is possible today, fractionally better for Saturday though lots of showers, similarly for Sunday, Monday better until the evening, Tuesday as bad as today, Wednesday lots of showers, better from Thursday though some showers on Friday. Centre Court and No. 1 Court will have play as those will be covered,
