Slim, I haven't spotted anything new of interest to you on the Talking Pictures tv channel during the coming week.. Tomorrow evening, there's Hitchcock's  "Rebecca" which you've seen. That's followed by "The Bedroom Window" (1987) a typical thriller of that era. Not a recommendation, only reason for mentioning it is that it's strongly influenced by Hitchcock films and includes reference to some of his films, for instance the title is an obvious reference to "Rear Window" I doubt that the film is up to Hitchcock's standard though.

Thank you El

Yes, I've seen 'Rebecca'
Think I might leave watching 'The Bedroom Window' to someone else

Hitchcock clearly liked Daphne Du Maurier's writing as ""Jamaica Inn" and "The Birds" were from her writing as well as "Rebecca".  Regarding "Jamaica Inn" neither of them were happy with the finished film as changes were made to the intended script in order to accommodate Charles Laughton.

Yes, I was surprised to find out that 'Jamaica Inn' was a Hitchcock film as it didn't feel like one tbh.

You may not know was that the film company who produced "Jamaica Inn", Mayflower Productions was created the producer of the film Erich Pommer, and the co-producer Charles Laughton. So Laughton was much more involved in the making of the film than just his acting role.

Maureen FitzSimons had intended to become a stage actress and an operatic singer. She went on to make a couple of minor films. Then Charles Laughton saw her in a screen test and was mesmerised by her eyes. So he decided to cast her in "Jamaica Inn". He and Pommer changed her name. And that's how she became Maureen O'Hara. She would go on to appear in Laughton's next film as Esmerelda in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame".

One of Charles Laughton's best known films was "Hobson's Choice".

Posted today on youtube is this television version from 1962 originally shown on ITV as one of their "Play of the Week" series.

Laughton's role of Henry Hobson was played by John Barrie. One of the key characters was. Maggie Hobson (Brenda de Banzie in the original and in this version by Patricia Routledge).
The other key character was Willie/William Mossip (John Mills in the film) and in this version was none other than Michael Caine).

Slim I know you aren't watching "Impossible" on BBC Two over lunchtime as they are repeating episodes shown a year ago.
In today's episode, the first question was about a song from 1991 by a British comedy duo with the 3 choices being Trevor and Simon, Hale and Pace, and Dalziel and Pascoe. Dalziel and Pascoe was of course the impossible choice. They didn't say why Dalziel and Pascoe was included as a choice. The reason is that some years before the better known tv series of Dalziel and Pascoe was made, Hale and Pace were in a 1994 ITV adaptation of one of the books called "A Pinch of Snuff".  It was appalling. The author of the books Reginald Hill prevented ITV for making any further adaptations which is why the better known series landed up with the BBC.
In the unlikely chance it's ever shown again, avoid,

Thanks for the heads up El

I've not watched 'Dalziel & Pascoe' before...
I have spotted however that there is a new series of 'Midsomer Murders' though
Shame it isn't John Nettles but...

I think yesterday's episode of "Midsomer Murders" was the last episode of series 23, Slim .  Series 24 has been made (4 episodes). Those have been shown in other countries but have yet to be shown here. "I'm a Celebrity" starts nest Sunday so I don't think series 24 will get shown for some time.

Yep used to watch both

If ITV were to ever want to have another series from the Morse/Lewis/Endeavour people there is one thing they could do. That's a follow up series to the Shirley Truelove character who was in series 3 to 5 as a WPC. She left to join Scotland Yard. What happened to her there and how did her career develop?
