I blame the book, One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich, which I read in school.

I always think of it as  a place the Russians sent prisoners /rebels /dissenters etc

 Yes....that’s what that boring book was about - a single day in the life is a Siberian prisoner- worst book ever
