David Beckham will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards tomorrow.

The broadcaster revealed that the award will recognise Beckham's "huge contribution to football" over the 18 years he has played since making his first-team debut for Manchester United at 17 in 1992.

Beckham has won 115 international caps - an all-time record for an English outfield player - and amassed over 450 appearances in his senior career. He also remains the only English player to score in three consecutive World Cup finals.

Having twice been a runner-up in the Fifa World Player of the Year award, the father-of-three was previously named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2001.

Previous winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award include last year's recipient Seve Ballesteros, Sir Bobby Charlton in 2008 and Beckham's former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2001.

Why bollocks? The guy is a good player and he's sincere about the things he believes in. Why the antypathy? Is it because he's become a brand? Is it because people (irrationally) don't like his wife and the mother of his 3 children? Get a grip please. He's a nice guy, his family is a nice family.

Get a grip??? He's been handed England caps by default which is an insult to the likes of Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Billy Wright. He bangs on about England being great and how its the "home of football"... yet he buggered off to Spain as soon as Madrid had shown some interest. Also got himself stupidly sent off against Argentina.

If you ask me, he should stick to launching aftershave and Calvin Klein underwear.

Just being a rag tw*t is enough for me to hate him... you can add his dull speech during the world cup presentation to the list aswell. The only positive I can say is at least he hasnt had an affair. Not a fan, never have and never will be...

ffs... Fergie wanted him out he SHIPPED him out. If you don't like him fair enough but let's get this much right at least.

He didnt have to go to Spain though... if he loved it as much as he says he does then he should of said he wanted to stay in the country, not be pushed out of England because Baconface doesnt want him.

He's had at least one affair if I recall.

Aside from that, fair enough.  Captained England, numerous key goals in key games for club and country.   Apart from a few odd occasions and tantrums, he's conducted himself well over the years.

True, he's followed the money and he's a bit of a media whore but that shouldn't detract from what he's achieved in the game and for the game.

Beckham loves England and loved Man U. No way would he ever have gone to another PL team. He has integrity. Fergie wanted him out and off he went, against Beckham's wishes. I really hate how people hate him for absolutely no reason at all other than he is David Beckham.

Ferguson kicked him in the face with a boot. As for affairs, nobody has any idea if he had an affair. I don't think so, but actually who cares when all the others f**k around like there's no tomorrow. Footballers are not a nice bunch of people and Beckham and his family are at least showing something none of the others do.

Because footballers have done nothing special... he played football, so what? He didnt exactly win trophies all by himself.

Jenson Button won the F1 Championship and David Haye won the World Heavyweight Championship. The only reason why Giggs won it was because football is the most popular sport over here meaning fans voted for him simply because he plays football. Gary Neville or Micah Richards could be on the shortlist and even they would probably win it.

Ian Holloway Comes out with some classics and is clearly passionate about the game... but also talks crap.

"Mr Platini, i know he was a great player but he's not very good at what he does. In fact i think he's useless. And you can quote me on that."

He is Media Gold though...

His 'rant' about his thoughts on moving the World Cup to the Winter is classic entertainment

Forgetting the merits of FIFA/'Seth Bladder'/Platinni, Holloway stated (Paraphrase) ...."that they (FIFA) are being stupid for wanting us(The Premier League) to not play when we should be doing."

I can't help but spot the irony in his statement, as Blackpool themselves seem to be doing a fairly decent job of not playing when they should be, thanks to sub-par facilities at Bloomfield road

John Terry is only with his family because his wife, in the face of awful provocation, decided to take the money and stay with him. Victoria doesn't have that problem. She's a person in her own right, so if she really felt he was cheating on her, she could just turn her back and tell him to eff off. She didn't.

Theres hardly a difference between both... had Victoria left him she would of faded away like the other spice girls. Lets face it, to stay in the public eye she needs David Beckham.

MrPie, she would have, not would of, but never mind. She's not a Spice Girl anymore, so she wont be defined by that anymore. She's rich enough to do her own thing if she didn't love him, yet she does. Is it at all conceivable that a show biz couple love each other and their children to the point were there want to see things through for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health. They have been doing it for years, why decry them?

I don't follow football but I think he's a worthy award winner. Despite the whole brand Beckham stuff it seems that his heart and first love is always with football. He's admired by loads of kids and from what I know, an inspiration. He always comes across as a dignified bloke (post the world cup send off), not bold or brashy but thankful and grounded. Even though he doesn't play for this country he still represents where he can.

He could be a total shit behind closed doors I don't know, but to me, he seems a genuine fella.

Its not about her though, shes not the one up for an award... its about him and sport. He's done nothing thats worth a lifetime achievement award. The only reason he got so many England caps is because he played in every game for only 5 mins.

Both Bobby Charlton and Bobby Moore got 108 and 106 caps... and they didnt get them by default. They actually contributed to the game. He didnt play too bad during his days at United, but from then on he was a total flop.
