Discovery, Sky about to announce Channel 5 deal?

Discovery, Sky about to announce Channel 5 deal?

Discovery Communications and BSkyB are on the verge of confirming a £350million deal to buy Big Brother broadcaster Channel 5 from Richard Desmond, it is claimed.

Industry magazine Broadcast suggests that Desmond will push ahead with the sale after the deadline for final bids expired yesterday.

The two media giants’ joint venture remains the favourite in the race, with Discovery believed to have a 70% stake – while Sky’s 30% will enable them to take over C5″s advertising sales, as previously reported.

Their £350million offer is half of Desmond’s £700m asking price, but more than three times the £103.5m he purchased C5 for in 2010. It also tops the £300m mark that analysts expected bids to fall under.

Discovery declined to comment, but a Channel 5 spokesperson was keen to point out that an agreement – which would be subject to regulatory approval – has not been finalised.

“We have a number of bids as expected, which we will evaluate with our advisors over the next few days,” they commented. “Certainly no deal has been done.”

Meanwhile, there is still no indication of what will happen to Big Brother when its current C5 deal expires later this year, despite recent speculation that ITV and its former home Channel 4 may be interested in acquiring the rights to the show.

Although Desmond is thought to fund BB from its own cash pot, sources have suggested that Discovery is planning to increase C5″s main programming budget by more than double.

Big Brother returns in June for its fifteenth civilian and fourteenth Celebrity series.

I find I get quite frustrated with BB now, the last time out I caught the beginning and then tapered off. I'm not keen on how it all seems staged and that the production really has run out of interesting things to do with it.

As for Sky I see it as the evil empire. They have too much buying power and too much control.

Ooops, I missed your fish message.

I was looking at wallpapers for my computer and say this small fish in a sea of blue, so I cut out the fish and made it fit the avatar space.

I have other fish's waiting their turn

We can be shameless together, Rog - along with the rest of the other FM's

I see BB as a bit like Christmas..... it happens, and Auntie Nelly always causes grief with her moaning, but you've just got to face it head on and get on with it.

I've only ever seen about 10 minutes of Finding Nemo, but I have now purchased it on blu-ray (3D) and will soon get the chance to watch it all the way through.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I thought it a little suspicious that this story came out just a fortnight after the Competition Commission was abolished - the same Competition Commission that previously opposed Sky's takeover of ITV...

That's the thing: I don't have Sky either, and BB wouldn't be enough to make me subscribe. Therefore if BB moves to Sky, that'll be me done with the show...

As far as Disney/Pixar go I really enjoyed The Incredibles, Bugs Life, Ratatouille, Monsters Inc, Wall E and Up. I have a few Disney/Pixar films to go through, Toy Story 1, 2 & 3 along with Finding Nemo and Brave.

I'll admit...I do have Sky Sports through Virgin Media, but I'm about to drop SS and have downgraded my package and I don't think I would willingly sign back up to watch BB

It will still cost £21.50 per month and for me still a no-no as I don't want to line their pockets. But this might be good for those who don't want to b uy into the full Sky deal.
