I've been wondering that too ... I think they are something to do with phones ... but I know not what
If you buy a printable online ticket for German Railways, it has one of these complex barcodes. The ticket collector scans it. (thought this was going to be a thread about Geordies)
They are known as QR-codes and were developed in Japan. They are an enhanced version of the bar codes we have become familiar with as they contain far more detail for data than the common stripes. They have become popular with mobile phone developers which is why they are also referred to as mobile barcodes.

QR codes.
QR codes.
In case you don't know already, they are QR codes.
Are they anything to do with QR codes?
I think they might be. Don't quote me on that though.
I can definitely confirm that they might or might not be QR codes
If you send an email to Professor Quentin Rhubarb at the Quebec Research Institute, he may be able to tell you.
I can't post the email address as it is in the form of a barcode and I don't have a bar code reader.
