I must say at the outset that I am not a financial expert (far from it.)

I keep hearing people in banking and related business say that it is important to pay substantial bonuses in cash and/or shares as well as a very high salary. They say it is important so that we keep these clever people in this country. (Although recent events suggest to me that they are not that clever.)

But my instinct tells me this is wrong. I would say don`t pay 'em these outrageous and obscene amounts of money. I also think "Let them go then. Let them go abroad."

Because I simply cannot believe that these are the only people who could do this job.

What happens when they die - are there no clever people to take their place?

I simply do not believe they are indispensible.

I think this "pay them a lot to keep them" argument is silly.

I would say stop paying such ridiculous amounts of money, and if they don't like it simply let them go.

I cannot agree with the so-called `experts` who say we can't afford to lose them.

a hell of a lot worse than what has
The problem is that these bankers :snigger: were being increasingly rewarded as the prices of their assets soared, but as soon as it was realised that they had invested in a crock of shite everything collapsed. I guarantee that somewhere in the system cautious people were questioning this poor display, but were ignored.

Financial services is one of the biggest industrys in the country. It's a major revenue earner for the exchequer. The worry is that if we stop paying them as much they will move abroad taking their tax revenue with them. If all the talent is working out of Zurich or Bonn say, then it would make sense for the financial institutions who are based in London ( and paying tax - we hope!) will follow suit so as to get the best people. This, plus all the knock on spending these bankers do ( on champagne and truffles etc) would leave a massive whole in the public finances.

First of all you have to get rid of the 'Old Boys' network, the City is infested with it.
Then you have to slash the bonuses paid to some fairly incompetant directors
Hopefully they'll resign
Then those who really do the work can perhaps be rewarded and some of the able people will smash the glass ceiling and come through
