As I was looking at this the baby started to kick me quite violently. I don't think it wants to be called Kelly.
Thats his/hers way of saying he/she likes the name
Plus it was originally a boys name so you could be super traditional and call it Kelly if its a boy too

I agree, in any language, boy's names appear to be the most difficult!
I don't know why but that's true. All the names we've come up with are really traditional and therefore really popular. There's just not as much variety for boys.
I know, so I named my eldest 'Seyhan' (say-han) My third child, son 'Orr-han' - my middle- a daughter is Tulay- (two dots on the 'U') making it - too-lie - (sounds bad via English I know) but it means 'lace moon'
Ahem, I think we're getting a little off track here gang. Just a reminder that we're after an older name, preferably over 100 years old ie Georgian/Victorian/Edwardian, and it has to be English or Anglo-Welsh, and preferably not a shortened version, and we don't really want a name that has been in the top 30 of the most popular UK baby names for the last 5 years.

It's hard because I really like loads of these names but I know so many little girls called Grace, Olivia, Ella, Megan etc and loads of little lads called Callum, Liam, Harrison etc already and all of their parents thought they were giving them unusual names. I really do want something a bit different though but not something modern. Names are so important but we're really struggling.

I'm thinking about Anne or Louise for a middle name. Anne my mum's and Louise is mine. I can't have Catherine because it's my loathed monster in laws name (but with a K).
I think Anne and Jayne are both good strong traditional names and they fell out of favour because people thought they were too common. I don't know any kids called either name.

Ellis was my choice originally but hubby didn't want it because it's Welsh. Now it's his first choice though and that's put me off! I don't know if it sounds a bit chavvy and like a made up new name. I'm not sure people will realise it's Welsh and quite traditional. What do you think?

That would have been Murphy for one of my son's.

I wish I had your name! Lovely! My friend called hers Niamh & Eioffe (sp)...you should know how to spell & pronounce that Irish Princess!
Aoife, it is usually spelt Devil. Pronounced eefa
Thats just ti they might have been common 30 years ago but they aren't now. I Know Anne, Lousie and Catherine's who are all in their 30's but don't know any kids with those names (except for the shortend Kate Cath etc etc)

I love Ellis and don't think it's chavvy or made up at all. Very classy in fact! Reminds me of a very posh New Hamptons / Harvard kind of chappie.

What about Rose or Mary?
Rose is making a bit of a comback apparently. I looked at my family tree and my great great grandmother was called Mary-Anne Jones and she had six children called Agness (my great grandma), Rosetta (AKA Rose), Rebecca (AKA Cissy), Redvers, David (AKA Walter) and Richard. I quite like most of these names but my hubby won't entertain any of them though.

I liked it as it's been used as a literary male pseudonym by two of my favourite female authors - Emily Bronte (Ellis Bell) and Edith Pargeter (Ellis Peters)

Ellis is one of my family names - I've been doing research on my family tree and it's fascinating to see Ellis, along with Earnest going back through the generations. Btw we're not welsh - the whole family is a village in Leicestershire and has been there since the start of the records!
I don't know if it's be any aid but my four children are:
Benjamin David
Abigail Emma
Tegan Isobel
Zeke Andrew Clarke
Clarke there is my husband's middle name and his mother's maiden name. I know Ben and Abby are both in the top thiry list so you'll probably discount them. But Tegan is nice - we pronounce it Tee-gan but my obstetrician when I was giving birth to her curtly informed me that it should be pronounced Teg-an (like Megan). Tomayto - tomahto to me lol. However, it means 'beautiful' and it's unusual without being outlandish. Both the youngest children have been given very conventional second names so if they fee; that they don't like having a less-conventional first name then they've got the option of using that instead.
Caroline (line, not lyn)
Mary
Robert
Charles
I think all these go with Duncan and they're traditional.

I agree with you.
Anne and Jane/Jayne are both family names for us on our Irish side and have now been passed on to my German side. Both beautifully classical names. I have to say that all your name choices are fabulous.
It's been lovely reading your post. I don't have children (on adoption list) and have allowed myself the indulgence of choosing a name for our yet to be known baba.

Thank you Holly. It's a funny thing but although I never really thought we'd have children, I've always had a slight indulgence for thinking about what I'd call a baby if I ever had one. It's so much easier when it's an imaginary child your thinking of.
I think it's wonderful that your are planning on adopting. Will you definitely get a baby or could it be an older child?

Hi Queenie, down for both and would welcome either. My wonderful husband, who is a darling is in favour of having an older child who needs love and affection (nearly crying writing this)
soooo better keep you're fingers crossed.

Oh I love the name Eleanor, it's on my list already. I've still got two months left but I'm getting quite excited/panciky about it now. How are you feeling? I bet Eleanor's beautiful. Have you posted any pics yet?
