This morning 3 baby blackbirds fell from the hedge in my garden and unable to put them back into their nest. Anyone know what I should do? They're currently just sat in an old hanging basket on the floor. They look alright at the min but concerned about later this evening when the cats are out. Was thinking of just hanging the basket up and putting some more plant material in it.

Hook the hanging basket high off the ground so the cats can`t get to them. Make sure it`s not on a tree or anything that they can climb up on.

Yes. If you`re unsure about what to do Meaty, my advice is to call the RSPB. They come out really quickly to help, in my area anyway.
I saw a bird and her fledglings trapped in an odd setting in graveyard, having fallen out of a tree. I phoned, they were there within an hour and saved them.
Yea the rspb is the best to phone,have you seen any of the parents tending them? if the nest is "empty " they may abandon it.Sadly it's hard to rear baby wild birds they need expert care.
Not tried rspb yet, may do... anyone know the number though? Tried calling the rspca, she just said take it to local vet if injured and try keep them off the ground.

I don't think they were yogi, anyway, decided to hang the basket next to the hedge. Cats shouldn't get near it and I'll leave it alone now. Hopefully the mother will return sometime soon.
Take them inside, train them to be ninja black birds, send them out on 'errands'

Katty, I must admit, the baby birds in Meaty's pic, don't look ready to fledge. I would expect fledgelings to have more feathers than those birds.
Hopefully their mother will return and take care of them.
Are the parents about? or is there anymore young in the nest... it could be a cuckoo which will kick the other babies out of the nest so it gets fed on its own
PICK them up and put them back in the nest or if the nest is broken put the broken bits of the nest then place it all back in the hanging basket and hang it up where the original nest was.
I had this exact same problem last year and thats what the rsbp said i should do, birds are not in any way put off their young by human smell, unlike mammals.
I took loads of pics of our baby blackbirds last year, those look not really really young but still a long way off fledglings. The mum should come back if you can get them up and safe

they scared off this years black birds so the eggs didnt make it past being eggs
Aww,I've seen on websites and Spring watch etc that blackbirds are having a tough time in England due to drought in the Spring,the parents can get access to worms ,slugs etc due to dry conditions .They are okay up here in Scotland..blooming magpies permitting!

Good news, they made it through the night Went to have a look this morning, all wanted food when I got there. Will leave them now and wait and see if the mother will arrive.

Have you put the orginal nest in the hanging basket? only maybe the mum is going back to the hedge looking for them, can you somehow get the hanging basket into the hedge where the original nest was?....

Nope, its hanging right next to it though... she found them ok yesterday. Will wait and see if she returns again.

Awww really glad she is back. Ours did used to leave the nest for quite a while when they were young, i hope they are all going to be fine

Well, 3 jumped out this morning... 2 went into the bushes, the mum has been sat there all morning. I think its now they are fledging, the other one flew off and now there is just one left in the nest.

Ah they now have a feather covering so they'll be off.sadly only one may survive,blackbirds fledge without being able to fly well so can't escape the pesky moggies etc.
