That's one of my pet hates too, Brisket.    It's right up there with people who 'use to' do things they 'should of' done and 'pacifically' tell you things.     One day, someone will pacifically axe me to do something they should of done and I'll just cry....

It's "Sat, sitting there"! 

Ok, I'll go off defeated. Thing is, I had to learn the English language and it seems wrong when, what I've had drilled into me, suddenly becomes irrelevant.

Chelsea from EE used to drive me crazy saying "arks" instead of "ask"   Then again, that character drove me crazy just by existing.

No Blizzie.  I only encountered a Scottish person when I was 22 and spoke English already, that's why I became his girlfriend (apparantly).

Rexi, I pronounce "law" as it is said in Blizzie's link (with no r sound at the end).

Learned and learnt are the same thing, I think it's just an American distinction. It certainly doesn't impede on conjugation verbs.

Oh dear ... I think I say it exactly the same as that too - but I hear an r at the end!!!

It's all a bit of fun though, isn't it? English Grammar is a rich ever changing tool pretty much devoid of historical rules.

GJ, as I said, you learn another language over 8 years and then be told it doesn't matter anymore.

But when I go to The Fatherland, in spite of the consistent pronunciation, they have a different set of hip words n expressions each visit.

We were told at school that people who learnt English as a foreign language would always shame us with their knowledge of grammar and spelling. I guess it would be the same for English people learning another language ( if such a creature exists ) As GJ says language, and the rules thereof, are always adapting.
I try to be tolerant but I tend to gnash my teeth at the growing number of Americanisms in our language particularly by youngsters.

Growing up and being educated in America, "learnt" was considered to be very bad grammar.  I was taught that it is "learned".  Same goes for "spelt".

I get quite annoyed with Alesha Dixon (for example) who constantly says "you was" and shout at the telly WERE, YOU WERE!

I also get annoyed at seeing the incorrect usage of you're and your, as well as their, there, and they're.  If I, as thick as I am can understand the difference, others should as well.
