it's just a repeat of what he said two years ago when he said it was a necessity of the coalition agreement.

He hasn't apologised for selling students out, he's apologised for making the promise in the first place.  His 'apology' was more of a self-justification than an apology.  In the Blair style - I let you down but it did it for the greater good!  Utter rubbish, of course.

It wasn't a promise they couldn't keep, it was a promise they didn't care enough about to keep.  It was a vote catching policy they went around the country swearing to uphold in all situations and signing pledges to that effect, while all the time knowing it was one of their most expendable policies.

If they really wanted this policy, they should have made it a core demand in the coalition agreement.  If they didn't, they shouldn't have had their candidates signing pledges.  The Tories 'found' the money for their pet project of free schools, after all.

The Lib Dems could have insisted that the money was 'found' for abolishing tuition fees,  Money can always be found if the political will is there.  Extra tax on any of fags, alcohol, gambling and petrol could be raised without much fuss.  Then there's benefit cuts and defence cuts.  Income tax rises, capital gains, stamp duty.  The point is the Lib Dems could have insisted on that policy and funded it somehow, if they really wanted to.

I love Vince Cable and I love Simon Hughes. I'm a natural born Social Democrat so I think Clegg's apology is okay. I had a chat with Peter Tatchell (whoops did I just drop a name?) last night after I heard him on a radio phone-in and he's of the same opinion, so if only one Militant Tendency can show some grace I'm cool with that

Great news that Clegg is in the hit parade too...if I could be arsed it would be my ring tone.

I really enjoyed that bit  I never miss the show...although Andrew Marr lets some off lightly

Clegg should move aside for Vince Cable.

Not Vince, I like Vince, but  as a leader, no way.

But  we don't have to worry, they'll be in the wilderness eating dirt for at least 2 decades
