over the comments Lord Young made.  Ok so we've just come thorugh a recession and cuts are being made however most people are much better off than they ever have been before.  More people are able to afford foreign holidays, more people own cars, more people possess a variety of expensive electronic gadgets and interest rates are the lowest they have ever been.  So ok life isn't perfect - it never will be but in many respects we've never had it so good!

Not sure what area you are in... but from what I see there are more people losing jobs. It looks like a very selfish government at the moment, help the rich when they don't really need help... and make life for the poor harder than it was before.

I don't see come 2012 when these student tuition fees rocket making life easier/better... after they finish and start earning over ÂĢ21k they are gonna be chased by debts.

One of the tv News a journalist spoke to a financial advisor and she made comparisons between the year 2000 and the current year. All in all the conclusion was that he was right but also wrong

He shouldn't have made the blanket statement that everyone is better off than they were, that just can't be as the law of averages would say some are worse off than they were for whatever individual reason for them.

There are people losing jobs everywhere - however we have to remember that we have a welfare system that will take care of these people.  Furthermore jobs are only one aspect of life - there are many other aspects which we really couldn't complain about - things we didn't have 20/30 years ago.

UK economy officially grew in January meaning we are out of the recession
I would love to debate this with you more but given that my house has dropped in price yet again since January, the return on my pension has fell through the floor, the job situation in our area and the country as a whole is at a record low and the fact that January was ten months ago I have neither the time nor inclination

If there was nothing wrong with what he said why has he given in his resignation and Mr Cameron accepted it so graciously? Nuff said.

He should speak to some of the blokes my husband knows through his work.... Oh no he can't cos several have committed suicide and quite a few more have recenlty suffered heart attacks though the stress of the work situation being so crap.
How many people are we talking about here in proportion to the whole work force - don't get me wrong it is very very sad when something like that happens but no matter what the rest of the world is going through/experiencing there will always be someone going through a bad time.

The problem with this country is we only ever discuss the "bad" aspects of our lives rather than focusing on what is good - we have countless mod cons, most of don't need to worry about where our next meal is coming from and most of us have a fair few luxuries etc hardly things to complain about are they.

In the last 3 months there ahve been about 3 heart attacks and only a couple of weeks ago a bloke had a stroke (just outside a school and careered through a central reservations and had to be cut out of his vehocle by the firebrigade....and there have been 2 suicides...I'm talking out of about 50 people.

And there are also blokes that have handed back their vehicles to the finance companies taken thousdand of ÂĢ's losses on them because they cannot actually afford to work and are better off on the dole...because at least that way they are not slipping further and further into debt ona  daily basis.

At least that option was there for them though - I have never been in such a position so I won't pretend to udnerstand how it must make a person feel but I imagine it must be pretty tough however shouldn't we consider ourselves almost dare I say it "lucky" that if we are ever in such a position there is a system there which will assist us in getting back on our feet.  That will ensure we never have to be in a positon where we have no food or no roof over our heads.

They should think themselves lucky they have lost their livlihood...and are thousands of pounds in debt to boot?
I think you have twisted what I said a little there - we are ALL lucky to have the welfare system we have in this country so that when we do fall upon times of hardship there is something there to help us.  Like I already said I don't for one second believe that thes men will feel lucky at this time and probably feeling pretty low but they would be in far more serious position if our welfare system didn't exist so in that respect we are lucky.

Well i was talking about the workforce i know about, some of whom have been diong the job for 30 odd years and have seen recessions come and go and they ALL say they've never had it So bad!

The subject will obviously be very raw for them therefore they  will not really be looking at the situation objectively - we as a nation always spend more time thinking about what we don't have rather than considering the things we do have.

Why are they not looking at it objectively? Are they all stupid or something? Surely if they are worse off now doing the same job than they have been in the last 30 odds years there is only one way to look at it.

The RCN have estimated that up to 27 thousand front line workers could lose their jobs.

When you consider how much of the population that will actually affect it is a very small amount therefore as Lord Young said MOST of the population are in a good position.  And before you say it - I am not heartless - I have every sympathy for all those whose jobs are in jeopardy at the moment but we have to put things into perspective rather than always concentrating on the negatives in life.

No they're human - we have all been there at some point in our lives - in a situation which is awful and all we see is all the bad things about that situation rather than looking at what we do have.

Like I said work is one aspect of life - they may be worse off doing that job however I'm sure like most people they have a lot of other things in their lives and open to them now that they didn't have 30 years ago.

For most poeple they really don;t.

But what evidence do you have to back that up??

I garee with Lord Young - I have no definitve proof to say he is right however evidence I have seen points to him being right.  The example given earlier regarding PSW is one such thing - 27,000 people losing jobs is such a small proportion of the population.  yes it's awful for each and every one of them however when considering the population as a whole it's a tiny proportion.

Fall back on benefits? Have you ever gone from earning ÂĢ50,000 a year to getting benefits (ÂĢ200 a fortnight)? Have you ever tried to pay a mortgage, buy food, pay council tax, pay for utilities, etc., on ÂĢ100 a week? Nah, didn't think so.

it's better than having nothing to fall back on.  And many people do it - plenty argue that they are better off on benefits than they are working.
