Well it is really if we do not get vetted when we travel to Europe.

For holiday or work you mean? I don't mean vet people coming for their holidays, but a system to make sure people can support themselves while they're here working (like already exists for non EU nationals). It's fair enough if other countries want to impose the same on British people going to work there too

I did wonder, if we leave the EU, will this affect people's fags n booze runs to Calais? Have they considered that?

Well what I would like is that no one from the EU comes here ( apart from genuine asylum seekers, students and of course holiday makers ) without already having a job ....because I think most of the problem seems to stem from the the perception ( rightly , or wrongly) that a significant percentage of those arriving here join the benefit culture . (I believe that we are already doing something  along those lines for non EU members....many of which have closer * ties* to us than a lot of European countries....but I stand to be corrected on that one ) .   I don't consider it racism ....I consider it economic * prudence* .....but it's never going to happen while we are in the EU as it stands , given the totally open borders policy .

We'd have to get visas,  can't be doing with that, if I wanted to drive to Greece, I'd have to spend hours in various embassies, getting  the right bits of paper stamped.

I think we were allowed more booze and fags before we joined the EU, reason enough to get out now...

Non EU immigrants already have  major restrictions placed upon them.Every time they request a visa for leave to remin, it costs the prospective immigrants  a serious amount of money, and as all requests are initially refused, they have to apply at least twice, but more commonly any number of times, this process can take months  and some times years.

If they succeed in being granted a visa and given leave to remain, they are not permitted recourse to public funds , even before they are granted a visa one of the stipulations that has to be satisified is that you have  several thousand(5 last time I looked) and if you are joining your spouse here, he/she  will have to be earning over  ÂĢ18,000 a year, that's probably gone up tooby now.

When my friend came here he had to wait 9 months  and made 4 attempts to get a visa and then he had to pay heaps to take the UK citizenship test( I failed btw) all in all the whole process cost him over ÂĢ3,000.

The situation is entirely different for asylum seekers .

Exactly JB ....which seems wrong to me .....especially applied to say Commonwealth members ...when EU members simply jump on on a boat or plane and enter with no restrictions at all

It's horses and courses  Baz, when we had the housing boom a few years back, many Brits were delighted to see the poles flood in, they sorted the plumbing and electrics, and  anything else needed, then millions went back  when the bubble burst, so that's quite a positive immigration experience.

The Romanians and Bugarians that came here  10 years ago,had to be self employed, that is why we didn't have the great waves of them racing in when the restrictions came off, those who wanted to come here, generally, already  had.

When we aren't so popular, folks will move on to another place and that will include us, I expect.
