Possibly for a non-English AND non-German speaker there is not a great difference in learning the two languages, but for us English speakers the way we learn the two languages is quite different. In my experience there is not so much emphasis on the understanding of the different tenses and when they are used in English, but there is in German and other languages. I feel I understand the structure of English better BECAUSE of having learned other languages. Not that anyone taught me that, I figured out the similarities myself.

French and German have different roots. IMO the roots of French (and other Latin languages) and thus the structure, are simpler and less complex than the Germanic languages.

I am almost at the end of level one British Sign Language - have really loved it although I'm a bit slow and don't think i will take it further.  Mt sone and daughter are definitely going on to level 2 though.  If anyone is contemplating sign language - go for it.  Has been great fun and  our teacher was brilliant! 

That's fantastic and well done to them. I had 2 friends at College who were deaf and we connected through a love of Wrestling and Football but the interpreters were wonderful and I really respect what they do.

Arabic is hard, I can read it (not done it for ages) but only know a few basic words it's hard to say and even harder if you try to spell it.

The only languages I have done that have a different alphabet are Russian and Greek. However, although they can look quite different in their written forms, I found that their basic structure was not too dissimilar to other European languages.

I did Latin to O-level and French and German to A-level. Now, at the age of 53, I'm learning Japanese. It's bloody hard (especially the reading and writing), but it'll come in really useful in a few years' time if I can keep it up.
