A pupil and his parent in my local paper was calling for To Kill a Mockingbird to be banned cos of the racist language. That book had a huge impact on me as a young person reading it. It never once encouraged me to go out and say those words to anyone, it made me realise how ignorant and wrong it was. Was sad when I read that newspaper story.

You're all going to hate me - but have you read an Enid Blyton recently?

They really are the most badly written books. I collected them for years and have a huge collection (in the downstairs loo!)

My children were not the slightest bit interested in them, and I can understand why - they are sooo tedious.

I have great memories of them too - but there are much better books about these days

Eeker Never heard that!

Rexi I haven't read one recently but I suppose you don't really notice the bad writing when you're young!

They're pretty old-fashioned books I guess - probably not something kids are into at all these days Big Grin

I love gollies and have loads of them including one I had as a child but shopkeepers sometimes have to keep them hidden away for fear of being prosecuted.

Never occurred to me about Fanny and Dick, but I'm obviously an innocent flower!!

We don't keep them in our school library simply because there is much better childrens literature these days! They are also dated.Same reason we dont keep Mallory Towers and chalet girls(I loved Chalet girls as a girl!!).I kept mine and gave a couple to my kids to test and I think they just want something a lot pacier these days.I was raised on Enid Blyton and it didnt do me any harm!!lol
I think its just changing times and changing tastes Smiler
The faraway tree is still a staple with the younger ones tho.

Aww I loved Enid Blyton when I was growing up, Folk of the Faraway Tree, the Wishing Chair, The twins at St Clare's and the Naughtiest girl at school, I still have them all at my dad's house. Naughty Amelia Jane was a goodun too. Big Grin I know someone called Fanny, she is French but her dad was from the US and it still amazes me that he effectively called his daughter 'Arse'. Laugh

I still have all my books from when I was small. I do think that Enid Blyton seemed to fall foul of the pc types, I've heard a lot of people say that she was racist and her books are all about middle class white kids etc.
Well I read virtually all her stuff and I never turned into a rabid BNP voter who reads the Daily Mail.

This is a dangerous policy that leads ultimately to 2 year olds running round supermarkets screaming 'sh1t' and worse at the tops of their trilling little voices

I should have thought that through a little better. I meant that with words like 'dick' and 'fanny' that aren't inherently 'bad', which weren't intended as 'bad words'.

Obviously it'd be different with stronger words that actually are intended to be offensive or rude, or that have developed into slang.
