My eight year old only found out the other day that Dick is a real name.

He's still laughing about it!

ahhh you see if it was in America, that'd be okay...you see because in America fanny means something else....I can't get away with that joke twice can i?

(is this a joke btw toots because if it's not it's very disturbing...I used to love the Famous Five when I was a kid...poor Enid...between Fannys, Dicks and golliwogs, she's not standing the test of time very well is she?)

There were Enid Blyton books in the library of the school I was trained in and my kids' schools.

I think sometimes some Heads take daft decisions and then the gossip spreads that all schools have banned things.

When the Head banned chocolate and fizzy pop (which I agreed with) to hear the parents carry on you'd think she'd banned eating

No its not a Joke Temps, I been informed its been removed from school librarys and maybe public ones so was really wanting to know if its true.

How stupid , used to love reading all them books at School sitting on the Beanbag pillow things we had in class with all the others .

Maybe it's more of a case of some schools and libraries replacing their old copies with the new (tinkered with) copies...not so much banning them?

I remember one story where Dick upset Anne and Julian told him to back off and went to comfort poor Anne who was scared and crying...I think I may have had a small crush on him after that

I haven't heard anything and I work as a librarian. I think its probably individual policy. High school libraries often have quite contraversial stories in there, its reading for young adults, I think anyone who finds Enid Blyton too raunchy needs a serious head check.

I was told the other day that one of the most popular books at the moment is Before I Die, Jenny Downham which deals with sex, drugs etc so I don't think Fanny and Dick would cause such a problem.

It could even be that Fanny and Dick makes the kids collapse giggling and then reading time is ruined by a gaggle of hysterically laughing kids...so it's easier to get through the lesson with Fern and Dave (or summat?)

how old were they? I read the books when I was about 10/11 and fannys and dicks were far from my vocabulary back then

What has caused most of the problems with E.B. is the racism and sexism in the books - from Noddy and the "nasty black golliwogs" to the Famous Five - with the depiction of travellers and any foreigners and the sexist attitude to girls and women.

Well the "baddies" were always foreign types,swarthy dark skinned or oriental etc.They muttered a lot it seems.
I loved the old CH4 series comic strip "five go mad etc".
