I have been having problems with Safari crashing the 20 minutes or so. I read online there is a problem around the world with the browser due to an update earlier this week...

There are reports of people having problems with Safari.
The Verge website mentions a temporary fix for this in this article:

It mentions disabling the search suggestions feature. Here's a link to how to do this:

As I don't use Safari I can't confirm that this works.
Had a problem earlier - thought it was something I was doing wrong. Seems to be rectified now.
Applt says they've fixed the bug but it may take time for the patch to get through to everyone.

According to that you can speed up the process by clicking on the "clear history and website data" in Safari's preferences.
Is it crashing when you go to load a website, Moonie? That's what happened to me. I'd type the web address in the box, press enter and it would just go back to desktop

Yep, that's what was happening Madame 
I did what El's link suggested and it seems to be okay now

I've had problems with it crashing since the previous update.

Yogi, try the solution suggested in El's link above. It worked for me
