I have a Co-op card as well but no letter yet.

But I've seen this on their site:

This has been a challenging year for the Group, particularly the Bank, and as a result we did not make a profit in the first half of 2013. This means we are not able to pay an interim dividend to our members.

However, we understand that Christmas is a particularly expensive period for our members and their families, when household budgets are stretched. That is why we have launched an additional reward which will enable our eight million members to collect 10 per cent vouchers in the run–up to Christmas.

Between 18 November and 15 December every time a Co–operative member, spending a minimum of ÂĢ5, presents their membership card at the till they will receive a coupon, worth the equivalent of 10 per cent of the value of their shopping (capped at ÂĢ10). That means if a Co–operative member spends ÂĢ30.00 they will be given a voucher worth ÂĢ3.00.

These 10 per cent vouchers can be saved and used as a cash equivalent in any of the 2,700 Co–operative Group Food stores across the UK before 24 December 2013.

The Co-op site also has this:

Why should I keep my Co–operative membership card?

Support of our members is vital. We are committed to supporting them in a way that is sustainable for our business and gives them value. The reward scheme we have established ahead of Christmas is only available to members who swipe their card at the checkout and continue to collect points for the different products they purchase.

What is the point of being a Co–operative member?

As well as a financial reward, there are many other facets to Membership of The Co–operative which enables people to have a say in the running of the business, join campaigns and to take part in organised events with other members. In addition, our members gain exclusive access to a number of compelling discounts both from our own retail and service businesses and with a selection of carefully chosen partners.

Why should I keep swiping my card?

At the moment we have only decided not to pay an interim dividend. We remain committed to rewarding our members but given that we are unlikely to declare a profit for 2013 this may well not be in the form of a traditional dividend. When we have a full view of the Group’s performance for the whole of 2013 we will announce what our policy will be.

Pre-warned by most of the broadsheet money sections, we received the letter yesterday. Included a pamphlet which offered money off electrical goods. We're still after a new fridge/freezer but they are already heavily discounted.
It doesn't put me off shopping there.
Meanwhile, apparently hedge funds, financial institutions, and other shady organisations are queuing up to buy the funeral biz, but the Corp won't sell the Crown Jewels.

Aimee, If I understand your post your saying you have lost all the points already accumulated?

I have never had a card so not clued up on how it works.

Sounds a bit off to me.

The local store near where I work is awful. The staff seem to be on a permanent go slow, preferring to chat to the customers. Queues can be long and the take forever to realise it. unfortunately for me it's very close to work and rather convenient for quick trips out of work.

I assume I've lost the points unless they carry them over, they used to be on the bottom of your receipt but they've stopped doing it

Aimee

I got a letter from them a few months back saying here's your points but they'll go towards your membership or summat like that so really you haven't got anything at all. .2 yrs of fiddling about with an extra card at the checkout, when I am already stressed cos I happen to actually be out and that's not easy for me in the first place and all I want to do is jump in the car and dash back home again, and I've nowt to show for it. .

Mind you I only go in the co-op once a month if that as it's the only 'biggish shop I can get to if I run out of stuff..  but still, thanks for wasting paper and postage and letting me know how many points I got then taking them in payment for something I thought was free

Well said Olly  the 3 local shops for me are all Co ops so we have no choice if we run out of something, I bet there will be some pee`d off people that have bought electrical appliances thinking they would be getting a load of points, this has really wound me up as I use it to buy little extra treats for Christmas and like I said why didn't they say something before now
