According to the list, I have more than 8000 community points - that clearly isn't the number of posts I've made, so how does it get worked out - anyone know?

Hi Rexi - if you click on most active members - to the right - there is a list of everybody's community points.
Sorry to disappoint, but I think they're stuck there - no spending allowed, otherwise darloboy would be on a mega shopping spree!!

Community points are earned by doing anything from making posts to inviting new members to join the website. Community points are used by the system to determine your community title.

I think they have carried post counts from Gaga over here... and added them to any points accrued over here.
