My late Mother hated lilies - those white 'arum?' (sp?) lilies. I do like the prettier ones but their stamens cause havoc if they touch anything so they should be snipped out - apparently. the perfume is lovely initially but they can give me a sick headache when they become too much. My eldest son however did buy me some 'Persian lilies' from M&s two weeks ago and they're still going strong, they don't smell but are so pretty and don't stain anything they touch.

I love Bluebells.

Arum lilies are my absolute favorite, i cant tell you how much i LOVE them. I have some in my garden, they were here when we arrived and they grow to over 6 foot tall !!!!! nobody has ever seen such massive ones. TBH i didnt know they could grow that tall but they do.

Aww, lovely gypsie, I do love them Nod - they look 'pure' somehow. Nod My Mum could have lily-of-the-valley growing all over her garden - it was beautiful, she gave myself and an old friend of mine 'roots' mine never took, my friend's spread over the garden like the flower did at my Mum's. I guess it's the soil?

I can grow herbs tho' - the legal ones before anyone starts. Roll Eyes

You are so right. I remember my dad being so dismissive of my migraines as a child and my mum used to get cross if I was sick with one. I got so bad that I was always sick with pain. My GP said I was too young to suffer with them... I have had them since I can remember. As soon as I could talk I told my mum that I had flashing lights and numb fingers and then a bad headache and she knew it was migraine but doctor said it was all in my imagination!!! Tool!

Teachers said it was to get out of certain lessons etc.

I have more attacks now but the headache doesn't always come but when the headache does come I am flawed!

Glad you have got better with your diagnosis Clapping

Nooooo... don't. They are the only thing I kill, and its taken years for me to get my head round doing it. Do you not get lily beetles on your lilies then Gypsie?

Initially, when they first appeared I would put them in a jar and send my daughter over to the green to set them free... but having seen them devastate one of my plants my heart hardened.
Dirtyprettygirlthing
If your lilies don't have loads of notch shapes missing from the leaves... or aren't covered with black goopy shit (which is actually just that).. then you prob don't have them.

Even in evolutionary terms they are defiant.

They are bright red.... they lay their eggs under leaves (little red lines of dots). when they hatch their larvae cover themselves in poop to keep themselves safe.

they look like this...

and I think I may have a hang up about them. They have really good eyesight so if you do pick them off a leaf you have to sneak up on them (imagine me commando crawling across the garden)... if they see you they fall to the soil and hide.

Have your B12 checked! The docs always checked my thyroid and it was only a fluke that reformed my life - as in - walking into the surgery one day saying ' god, I'm tired, I could sleep in the gutter, it can't be my thyroid, you've tested it enough!' Honestly.

I wouldn't buy lillies myself, but they are often central to many arrangements given for birthdays/anniversaries etc.

Just thought I'd mention it, as we are a nation of pet lovers Smiler

ooh didn't know that St Georgina, thanks Thumbs Up

Sorry if I'm repeating anyone but the lilies themselves are fine. It's the pollen that's toxic. If it falls onto their fur as they brush past and they then wash clean it can kill them or make them very ill. Frowner

By all means have lilies but cut the pollen filled stamens out and bin them and they're fine. Smiler

If you cut out the little stalky antenna looking things in the middle of them (be careful if you get the dust particles on your clothes it could stain) it helps to keep the smell of them down.
I agree when the lilies open I always cut them out as it stop the pollen stains going everywhere as the stains are very hard to clean Smiler
