Errmmmm, no then
You really know if you've got flu as opposed to a 'bad cold' believe me - in my 51yrs I can recall twice - it's flooring.
GMTV said this week - if you see a ÂĢ50 note and can't be bothered to pick it up you'll probably have flu.

I'm not sure........I had a terrible cold which borderlined FLU symptoms a few months back but I can't be too sure!

I'd have to be dead not to pick it up, even then I'd give it a go.

Might aswell be as you couldn't get up if you fell flat on your face - you'd just get comfy.
With proper influenza you can hardly lift your head off the pillow. A lot of people don't seem to be able to say they have a bad cold but like the drama of saying they have "flu".

A lot of languages, Turkish to my knowledge only have one word to cover colds and flu!

ive had flu twice in my life. Both times i couldn't move. i remember lying there hallucinating about getting some paracetamol that was right next to my bed for hours but didn't muster the strength to get them.
ive had it and its not a nice experience ,most of it i didnt know where i was ,i was only little but i was hallucinating because of the high temp
Only ever had it once.
And my god, i thought i was dying, was ready to call an ambulance and everything, till my mum told me to grow up as it was flu
It really knocks it out of you. You would know if you had Flu or a heavy cold. The difference is huge

I had flu a couple of years ago... now it drives me crazy if people say 'I was off work on Tuesday with flu...' If you're only off work a day, it aint flu.
My Hubby hasn't but I have and it was horrible. Tonsilitis is another that people like to say they have but it knocks you to the ground when you really have it. I was in bed for a week with that and I initially thought I had TSS.
Twice in 57years.
Four years ago, I broke my wrist.
Came out of hospital after an operation and my OH gave me flu.
We were both useless for at least a week.
Well, I'm fairly useless anyway, but I was really useless.
The kids became feral.

Funnily, my Doctor used that same saying quite a few years ago, and it's true.

Tell me - I left tonsillitis go so bad about 15 yrs ago I was bordering on quinsy (sp?) God the pain! Even my doctor was shocked I'd left it go that far thinking it was just a sore throat! I used to grit my teeth and grab the pillow to swallow!

I think so too.

Can they differentiate between flu and the sniffles though?

I don't think I've ever had it. I've had campylobactor (I think) food poisoning though. I honestly thought I was dying.

Yes, I was attacked by a reheated Chinese meal once. Very similar to Flu!
Yep 1976, I though I'd died. After I eventually got back on my feet, I was left with sinus for 4 weeks, bloody awful and I really do not want it again
The difference between a bad cold and Flu is really only a matter of degree. They are all viral infections producing much the same sympthoms. Factors such as the strength of your immune system, general health and whether or not you have already encountered a milder form of a virus will all effect how you feel.
Like most people I had flu more often as child, but as an adult I have only had a couple of bugs that left me too unwell to go to work.

No. And I can go one further - I haven't had a cold since 2005
I've had plenty of hangovers though where I literally couldn't move my head off the pillow and thought I was dying - does that count?

Had Flu once, piece of cake after being in hospital with dry pneumonia.
Hospital nearly killed me by putting me in an oxygen tent, which is the opposite of what I needed.

That's interesting.
Many years ago I thought that I had 'flu, the Hospital thought that I had Glandular Fever. I was in bed for a couple of weeks.
My own Doctor told me eventually that it was tonsilitis You are the first person to make me believe him.
it is true that a cold and the flu are both viral illnesses, however they are caused by different viruses. If anyone is interested here's a link that describes the differences in full.
I had the flu once in my life and was in bed for 2 weeks, with a fever, aching all over, vomiting, coughing to name just a few. So I totally understand how wound up people feel when a colleague comes in to the office, sneezes, blows their nose and then says "I've got a terrible flu" I wanna shout out, panto style, "Oh no you dont!!"

only once and I never felt so ill in all my life, thats why I laugh when people with a common cold go on about having flu.
i have had it twice in 4 years and my god it knocked me sideways. I was so rough and couldnt get out of bed for a week for the aches and pains
Me and my son had the flu at the same time some years ago. He was lying prone in the next room with the portable tv on. I was lying lifeless unable to move. An advert came on his tv about puppy dog food, explaining the ingredients ... he ran to the bathroom at the same time as me to be sick. It was barf barf United. We still laugh about it to this day. Flu is awful, it is debilatating and can never be compared to a cold.
Dont think I have.Have had para-influenza(milder type). Most debilitating thing I ever had was glandular fever which has similar symptoms.I couldnt get out of bed for a fortnight
I has flu once as a 15 year old and dropped from 8st to 6 stone (which at 5ft 9 was no joke) and I had it again 3 years ago (28 years later) (I went down the day before I was meant to go into hospital for an op)
had it about 3 times in mu life that I remember.
Had it last year for the first time in about 20 years and was in bed for 2-3 days and off work for a week.
Even when the worst of it had gone I broke out into a sweat and felt dizzy just walking across the room.
