According to the local paper they have planned a counter demonstration on the same day - and they said the march will be peaceful with no plans to clash!   surely to avoid confrontation you would have the protests on different days,   the other lot have said it's not against race but immigration - there are a lot of polish/lithuanains/ etc and it does feel as though the town is swamped.

yeah, they almost always have a counter protest I think. I was going to go to their one in Tower Hamlets against the EDL but chickened out cos I was scared of the EDL

i couldn't throw stones as i don't agree with violence,

the organisers do have a good arguement, it is not about race but how the number of legal immigrants are changing the town,  court reports show a high number of homeless europeans stealing to make ends meet having worked for a short term (lots of casual labour about), one school has over 65% foreign nationals and walking through town can be intimidating, however some migrant workers are integrating and the march could alienate them

You and me both Joe!! I remember some very hairy moments though in East London and around Hounslow years back.

Used to be the case that they would have a stall on one street and we would have a stall about 5 minutes away. Then there was the usual reconnaisance (sp) ops to see how many they had and they did the same to us.

Whoever was heavily outnumbered at a certain point would no doubt get a visit from the other side and get their leaflets thrown everywhere, table overturned and the odd slap!!

They can dress it up however they want! Essentially they don't like anyone different to their perceived ideas of englishness. I remember walking back into the city from York University on a night and they would have a crack at anybody, be they foreign looking (sic) or merely gay such as myself. Apparently purple loons, yellow starry shirts, and long hair were a total giveaway. Alas! For one poor unfortunate from Tang Hall I wasn't as soft as I looked. Tee Hee!

It doesn't seem to be about "englishness"  (and i am not usually niave)  but how a town can sustain a growing migrant population,  local industry is agriculture and "pack houses"  both of which employ a lot of temporary/casual work,  which results in terms of unemployment when migrant workers often find themselves homeless, the town doesn't have the infrastructure to keep growing, the march appears to be a "what are you going to do" rather than a "get them out" which is what i would support

Our wonderful mp has refused to comment, as it "is an extremely sensitive issue",  although he was "worried that the then  labour government had lost control of the immigration system"
