It's possible many of us notice different grammatical expressions that some use that we individually wouldn't, it's just observation from how we usually express ourselves. One online friend can only write phonetically but it's even beyond what some would say is phonetics. it's not text speak, there's a reason why she writes in the way she does. It took me a little while to get used to understanding what she was saying, now I can skim through her words without thinking about it. We might notice little things but in the end we can all understand each other if we want to

I admit to mentally having a red pen that corrects sayings and spellings    Overall, I just assume it's a regional thing or idiosyncratic when people write a phrase different to how I would

On a forum, personally it doesn't matter - the only thing I can't deal with is text speak which makes my head hurt trying to understand it

I don't, but sometimes wish I did when I get school and/or official letters with incorrect grammar or spellings. It's all I can do not to send them back with big red corrections all over them.

And I know in the general scheme of things that these things on a forum aren't important but I do still find all the usual ones mentioned in this thread very annoying.

The most irritation though, I save for the FB groups that have grammatically incorrect titles.

I despise when people correct spelling on forums, I'm talking forums in general not just this one.  Not everyone is blessed with perfect grammar and punctuality and for someone to correct them says more about their manners than the offending grammar.  IMO

Me too.   Actually, I think it's because my hands type independently of my brain... I have been known to type the wrong 'there/they're/their' because my hands are typing the sound without involving the brain.   If I notice I usually go back and edit, but Pengy's probably red-penned me a few times!

Yes, I do think it's bad form.. unless whoever does it trying to be a smart ass with someone else. I notice, but I don't comment.
Same....though when someone is being a know it all twat, picking someone else up on their spelling/punctuation and gets something wrong, it's great to see them get told.

OT I have to say that since my husband dropped the laptop and I've gone back to a normal sized keyboard my typing has improved again. On the laptop it was as if I was typing with sausages.

(I seen yer last Saturday, or I seen 'em last Saturday is perfectly acceptable in it's proper place-Teesside)
My take is this. I had lousy grammar and had to be coached to obtain GCE "O" at grade 6, a bare pass. I have problems  with spelling and  grammar. With keyboards one  can look at the post, it looks wrong or right, and one can correct it without a  mess. That's modern technology at it's best.
IMO though, it's best to look at the English Language as a tool, something that we can use, abuse, and have general fun with. In that way it evolves.

Don't forget! The current troubles of the world are not caused by people who have issues with correct language use. They are caused by those who had difficulty passing their Maths "O" level. Yes! It is the cretins who can't count, or add up. But we don't make a fuss  about them.

which is why I mentally do it but would never, ever correct someone on their spelling

It's always easy to pick up on someone else's mistakes   not so easy to see your own though

Ooh, I love pedantry threads too

Spelling mistakes I can live with, likewise typos, most people are guilty of these, especially when one is replying 'in the heat of the moment'.  However, what really annoys me is bad punctuation - particularly apostrophes in the wrong places.  The problem is that it can totally distort the meaning, so I end up reading something several times to work out what the person was trying to say.

It's like regional accents, there's nothing wrong with a regional accent, as long as people can understand what you're saying.  If you're incomprehensible to the people you are addressing, then your strong accent or lousy punctuation is BAD

Sorry, rant over (as Olly would say)
