There has to be some revision of the gun laws in America. You have to practise and pass a test to drive a car but you fill out a form and get a gun. More chance of being killed on the road than by a bullet.

I really don't want to get into the issue of comparing tragedies, but I hope you'll forgive me if I compare frequency.

Incidents like Dunblane are - thank God - very rare in this country. However today's shooting is (I think) the 6th of it's type in the States this year - and the second this week.

President Obama has now secured his second term, which means he no longer has to worry about pandering to the electorate.  I think it's pretty clear from his body language today that he knows in his heart what needs to be done: if he also has the courage, then Obama has a very real opportunity to go down in history as the first President to actually do something about gun control...

It seems a forlorn hope to me that congress will ever pass any law that Obama wants, I think the Republicans will always play politics, even in this tragic circumstance,I have a small hope that the  young age of the victims, will silence the gun lobby for long enough so they can get the gun laws  amended. But the 'right to bear arms' would seem far more important to many.

As someone on my fb posted, 1 person tried to blow up a plane with a shoe bomb so now everyone has to take off their shoes at the airport.  Yet there have been how many school shootings since Columbine and yet there are NO stricter gun laws in place?

Tightening laws would NOT take away their constitutional rights.  They would still be allowed to bear arms BUT there is no reason why there can't be more rules in place making it harder for just ANYONE to obtain a gun.  More checks being done on anyone who wishes to obtain a gun. Limiting the amount of guns....why does anyone need a whole case of guns to protect their land/family?  Surely they can only shoot one (maybe 2) gun(s) at a time?

Just read the flack Piers Morgan is getting in some of the American press, because he's saying people should apply  for a firearms licence, firearms should only be kept in the house  to defend yourself against intruders, mental health issues should automatically stop a person from getting a firearms licence,no criminal or ex criminal should be able to geta  licence.

One comment on the article blasting Morgan says' we need more guns not less, the kids were killed because  they were a weak target, '

Incredible eh?

I didn't even hear about that  Poor children, really glad no-one was killed in that attack but those kids must be mentally (and probably physically) scarred for life.  I hope they all get help to deal with it....it could have been so much worse and I'm really glad this attacker didn't have access to a gun.

Nancy Lanza was an avid gun collector who  once showed him a 'really nice,  high-end rifle' that she had purchased, said  Dan Holmes, owner of a  landscaping business who recently decorated her yard  with Christmas  garlands and lights. 'She said she would often go target  shooting with  her kids.

I love it when the pro gun nutters say that you could also kill people with knives or a car...but they seem to forget, cars and knives were designed for other reasons, not to kill people...guns sole reason for being is to kill and injure people.

The US need to scrap this stupid "right to bare arms" law...it's just simply out dated and stupid.

Sadly, the "arms race" response is standard practise for the pro-gun lobby in the States. Instead of considering any form of control, their "answer" to this recent shooting has been to have an armed policeman at the school gates and arm the teachers. Needless to say, they didn't bother to ask how the police or teachers felt about this idea first...

And the army.

But on DS right now im getting people telling me that those regular people in America need guns to protect themselves from muggers/burglars and so on,  but they seem to overlook that if gun ownership was limited in the States there wouldn't be so many criminals with guns.

I was watching SPOTY....straight into the 10 o'clock news and this was the first item, They showed the photos of some of the children who were killed and I am really crying!

They're saying that the children were shot multiple times and that Lanza used at least 4 guns and still had hundreds of bullets unused. Shot his mother several times too.

Extremely Fluffy Fluffy Thing
