Why is a Boyfriend cardigan called such? What aspect or feature of the cardigan is defined by the word BOYFRIEND?

I looked it up in Wikipaedia and you are right Aimee:-

In fashion design, primarily in ready-to-wear lines, boyfriend is any style of women's clothing that was modified from a corresponding men's garment.

However, I bought mine as a size 12 and it looks and feels like any other size 12 cardigan I have, except that it's long-line.

A bit of a wasted effort, if you ask me.
