Can't rid myself of the 'culture'. 

I'd class myself as a little religious, I don't go to church but I frequently light candles in them. I light them at home too, for people who've passed or for people who need help- call them prayers, wishes, anything you like. I think what's important is the intentions behind them. I try to be a good person, and the basic principles of most religions show us how. I don't like it when wars are fought and are classed as holy, IMO it's not right. I also don't like it when people argue over religion, there's no need, our hearts are big enough to love everyone regardless of their religion. I have friends who are Christians, Catholics, atheists, spiritualists and a dear friend who's Muslim.. I love them all, they are ALL good people I like to read about religions, if I don't understand something I find out about it..

Jen I haven't voted because although I believe in God and know and trust His Son Jesus Christ I would never describe myself as religious that's an awful word.

I'm with squiggle on this one. I'm a Christian and regularly go to church, but to me the word "religious" suggests someone who either had devoted their lives to Christ and is someone like a monk or nun, or someone where the various rites of whichever faith they follow has more importance to them than the underlying message.

Oh Jen I'm not in the least offended, it's just that in my view a simple 'Do you believe in God' might have been better

It always suggests to me EL some religious fanatic telling people they are all doomed which is the exact opposite of the message God wants to say to everyone no matter who they are 'I love you, you are my child'.

I know but i was trying to include all different religions in one question.

Jen I thought the one thing all religions had in common was a belief in God?  It might be tricky of course to then try to differentiate each person's own branch, I wouldn't like to try to phrase that question

Can't see much wrong in using the word 'Religious'. To me that means someone who believes in a higher power/God/gods and follows a religion.

I voted 'No, not at all', as I am an atheist, but growing up as a cafflick and mixing with friends and family who still are cafflicks, leaves its mark.

No, not now, as I am an atheist, but I certainly would have done, when I still believed.

I was brought up very "low church" C of E lite, in a small town. In our current town I was amazed to witness "high church" being as near as catholicism as can be.

Recently, at my father's funeral, I was surprised that people remarked on the fact that he had the vicar officiate. Apparently the C of E has a two-tier system where church goers/believers get the five star treatment, and the rest have a lay reader. Father as a regular communion attender received the full works.

I was never at ease standing by certain individuals in a church setting. There was a faint hint of hypocrisy and it led me to believe that if you want to converse with God, then you should go direct.

Religious fanatics do my head in, but they are nought compared to people who try to ram atheism down one's throat.
