Sounds like you are looking at a re-format fresh install of windows then letting the auto-update bring you back up to date if non of those tricks I found work at all Frowner

"First take a large brick...."

First off ... when you put in your windows setup disk does it offer you the opportunity to repair XP? using the recovery console..

Have a read of these two links

http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

if that is all rubbish then try....

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255867 but obviously re-formatting etc will wipe all your data....

Personally what I would do would be to buy and install a new hard disk as your primary C: drive.. install windows as per usual.. make your existing drive a slave and then you won't have lost and files still on the second disk but you have a fresh installation

Ok .. well sounds like a fresh install then.. your XP installation disk should give you the option to format and partition your disk.. been a while since I have run an XP install though..

Bugger.... you might be looking at getting some local expert help (not PC World Smiler ) then... tis a bit hard fixing PC problems at this distance.. as I said before I would use a fresh hard disk and hang on to the old one so that I can still pull old stuff off as I needed it... plus I have various CD's with support and fixing programs that are useful in kicking some life back into dying system.. my guess is that your registry has been screwed up amongst other things and that can be very complicated to fix.. not sure I can be of much more help but if I can just ask
