hello hello, just back from the grocery shop from hell.
i have to go for my annual trip to the hair dressers this aft it's pissing down, limpy sproglet's driving me nuts...what else???...ooh, and that livecloud...

Zaph - are you there? I could do with some computer advice please.

My (very old) desktop was working ok this morning. I have just tried to get onto IE and the egg timer comes up for a couple of seconds then disappears. So I tried FF - same thing. If I keep trying them it eventually comes up with a box that says it's encountered a problem and needs to close.

So I shut down completely and restarted. Same.

So I did a system restore to earlier this week. Same.

All other programs open as normal.

I'm writing this on my lappy.

Any ideas?

I assume you are using the same router for you laptop as you do for your desktop PC?

ohhhhh - I've just seen an option in the program menu for FF (safe mode) and that will load.

Yes I am zaph. It is just so weird that it is only these two programs, isn't it?

Luckily this safe mode thingy works (hubby would not be happy about me hogging the TV for BB tonight if he couldn't get on the internet)

Rexi, quite a lot of google hits re IE and FF only working in safe mode... talk of possible malware and viruses (people always accuse those regardless) .. what sort of firewall anti-virus type protection do you have?

I just googled it - lots of talk of going into Run and typing techy sounding stuff.

Think I'll do a full scan (although it scanned yesterday okay) and then run Adaware and see where I go from there.

Gotta go out for 10 mins - so if you come up with any ideas, I'm not ignoring you - will be back - thanks (in advance) for any advice

Rexi there's loads of possible reasons as Zaph says..

is it worth trying to downlaod FF and IE and install them again?

you should still be able to keep your favourites and bookmarks. . maybe a file has corrupted or summat..

Zaph would probably know better than me tho

Do you think it's ok to run FF in safe mode in the meantime?

It should be ok but I'd run all the checks first tbh... do you use the windows firewall or something else? did you say?

Yes - Windows Firewall.

AVG been running for 29 minutes and nothing found so far

This is so annoying because this computer is on its last legs and I'm replacing it next month - I only wanted it to limp through till then

Oh Rexi... you didn't mention replacing the computer where it could hear you, did you? .. no wonder it is playing up.. computers have feelings too you know... days away from being ditched.. how do you think it feels?
