We are going up to Inverness and staying over then getting the ferry from Scrabster, and stopping at Inverness on way back as well else it's a hell of a drive!
We were going to go from Aberdeen but the ferry doesnt get in to Orkney till midnight which is a fat load of use!

even inverness is a hike! i've never been any further up that side than st andrews, we usually go west, oban, lochaber way on. it's where o/h always went when he was a wee'un and we're continuing the tradition, love it there.

I went to Oban a few years ago and I loved it. That was where we were going to go again but I managed to persuade him that Orkney was a much better idea
We stayed a place called Croabh Haven in a Hoeseasons house called Loch Shuna...it was fabulous.
We had planned to go to Ganavan Sands this year, which is just north if Oban, but Orkney won (so it's on hold till 2011).
Inverness isnt that bad a drive, it's a long way but the roads are ok. It's after there than the roads get problematic.

i've got some great pictures of sproggy in shorts and t-shirt rockpooling on the beach there, we go october week and stay in a cabin near benderloch and sometimes it's unbelievably mild.
it has been known to piss down all week too.

When we went to Oban it rained the first day and it was really miserable....we were there for a fortnight and feeling a bit grim, all went and bought wellies for those who werent equipped etc...and so it was glorious the rest of the time, apart from the last day (when you dont care coz it's easier to leave).
We were at the Lakes last 2 years and the weather was bad last year.

and there's always the chance of the aurora! we got to see it up west one year, amazing, i kept having to ask o/h if he was seeing it too, it was sooo unreal.

I would love to see that but we are going at the wrong time of year I think.
Apparently it wont even hardly get dark.
