I'm glad that Channel 5 chose to broadcast this. The audience spend real money voting for these people, thus it is only fair that they know in advance what these “Celebs” in need of cash are REALLY like.

No Evander Holifield, Homosexuality is NOT a “choice”.
On the other hand being an ignorant bigot certainly IS...

Ps. I wonder if Mr Holyfield is really in a position to offer his bigoted views on morality & provide biblical quotes to justify them... You know after having 11 kids by 6 different women, several while still married.

A couple of friends/troublemakers who shall remain nameless occasionally drop offensive threads on my Facebook page to wind me up. Many of them concern some of the extreme views from the Bible Belt.
I think we can safely state that EH fulfils the repeated role of novelty American HM. Maybe it's easier for him to offend us, and take the sponds, than to offend the Christian Right?
Just a thought. Maybe I've seen too many Lee Nelson parodies.

The boxer/bible man is entitled to his view/opinion, as is everyone else!!!!  I'm not saying I agree or disagree with any of his views - or any of the views of anyone else.  Wasnt it the other one that started the convo about being gay??  BB is getting quite boring these days, IMO Evander shouldnt really have been warned, he's a grown man and knows whats what, u dont like what he says, vote him off - same as if u dont like religion, vote him off - same as u dont agree with vegetarianism, vote Liz off, u dont like this and u dont like that - vote it off!!!!  This world is getting ridiculous, no opinions, no nothing in case u get a libel case blah blah blah - we ALL have our opinions and should be allowed to express them, right or wrong, thats what makes the world tick - what I'm saying is, instead of all these PC warnings.... let him speak his mouth and dig his grave, or vice-versa - same with EVERYTHING, yes people will be offended, its sort of why we watch dont u think????

Either way, it's not captivating the GBP is it? After our bike ride I cast an eye over the headlines. They ranged from Simon Hoggart RIP to the Tories falling out amongst themselves. As one would expect only the Daily Star mentioned CBB and it was some nonsense of a faux  lesbicious nature.

Writing for PinkNews.co.uk, Richard Smith says the reaction to Evander Holyfield’s homophobic remarks on Celebrity Big Brother shows “the gay public realm has been hijacked by new puritans – bullies, censors, bores.”

Are you watching Celebrity Big Brother?

No, neither am I.

But some gayers have now got their overpriced underpants in a twist cause someone on CBB has said… something bad about The Gays!

Imagine.

BURN THE WITCH!!!

The accused, Evander Holyfield is a boxer, and a man who – let’s face it – neither you nor I had ever heard of before.

Oh, apart from some vague folk-memory about Mike Tyson having bitten a bit of his ear off long long ago.

Anyway, the other day Mr Holyfield said something nutty on Celebrity Big Brother about how he thinks being gay is wrong and that it could – and should – be cured.

As back up, he said it says in the Bible it’s wrong.

Case closed!

The man and his quarter-baked opinions are clearly an antiquated joke.

He’s a born-again idiot.

A bigot.

But instead of laughing this off some gay men have taken great offence.

Even complaining to Ofcom!

There’s probably a pointless online petition somewhere.

‘If you are mildly annoyed click your mouse now – then everything will be okay forever’.

But why?

Because people must not think bad thoughts or say things we don’t agree with?

Newsflash – Celebrity Big Brother is a reality TV show.

People watch it because it might show some vague semblance of reality.

So why be surprised – never mind horrified – when a real person says something that many real people really think?

This faux outrage over the slightest slight – sorry, ‘hate-filled anti-gay slur’ – has become a gay cliche.

Like when another vacuous Hollywood celebrity has said he’s not that keen on gay marriage.

Who cares what he thinks? He’s a vacuous Hollywood celebrity!

Just the other week there was some redneck on something called Duck Dynasty who also said something bad about The Gays?

I bet you never saw his TV show either, did you?

But he must be silenced – the gay thought police say NO! – and so he was suspended by the television station.

Why?

Because some thoughts are unbroadcastable, unsayable, now even unthinkable.

The gay public realm has been hijacked by new puritans – bullies, censors, bores.

Bedwetting pearl-clutching fools, desperate to take offence at anything and everything.

Privileged people painting themselves as victims.

There are so many things that are wrong in this world, why waste time on something as trivial as this?

When our mad right-wing enemies talk about a “gaystapo” – a new McCarthyism – it’s at times like this I increasingly think they may actually have a point.

And I worry our knee-jerk hysterical over-censoriousness is making us look like a joke.

Some people are still bigots – can we get over it, please?

Richard Smith is an independent journalist. His blog about gay men and the media – Fagburn – was nominated for Stonewall’s publication of the year 2013.

Great find there erin!  So much is true in that article. Unlike the homophobia that EH aired by saying homosexuality can be 'cured' in his odd born-again Christian world, he couldn't make the same argument for racism I'd wager.

We must have a debate about political correctness sometime elsewhere. For me it doesn't exist. Due to the transnational nature of t'internet people say all sorts of stuff. One can go out on the streets and protest about anything. We have allowed left wing protest, right wing protest, and even loonies like faux anarchists, UKIP and the EDL. I associate the term "political correctness gone mad" with people who are even older than me.

I'm sure he lets his Pastor and church do most of his thinking for him. The thing is, for me, it was almost a double whammy of insensitivity in what he said. He clearly stated that homosexuality was something that needed fixing and he also inferred that the more disabled among us needed fixing too, whether they could be or not. As someone who has a mother who is recently severely incapacitated it kinda resonated with me too. It's another thing I've heard my Bible-bashing, big mouthed but small-minded Aunts banging on about, and I have heard it preached in church and even some sap at my son's hospital had the cheek to say our kids were there for some sin we as parents had committed, while his own daughter was on a ventilator . I love my aunts though and if my mum lets her sisters drone on then I'll leave them to it.

Don't want to get too PC about it though because really and truly my part of the family don't give a toss and just mostly ignore them anyway

Very well said Suzy - it WAS a double whammy of insensitivity.

SO sorry you were on the receiving end of such an appalling comment. Cripes! Thankfully you've enough sense to ignore it

Oh no Rosie, he didn't get away with it, my husband tore him a new arsehole and ended it with a God Bless You  He never bothered us again, and in the few times I've bumped in to him in at clinic appointments in 12 or so years we've really got on.

Ditto. I think he should have been thrown out... its a derogatory, offensive remark [ private conversation, private beliefs or not]. Surely discrimination is discrimination? If one of the lesser celebs made those remarks... they'd have been turfed out that night like that BB Emily who said the "N" word.

Mind you on second thoughts, this is Ch 5, and they have Jim Davidson in there.

But it wasn't about race, you can't compare ethnicity to sexual preferences.I am not up to speed with what, if anything the bible has to say about race, apart from love they neighbour, but there is a text within the bible about homosexuality being wrong, that is where Evander's belief came from.He wasn't discriminating he said he thought it was wrong and could and should be fixed.

The Bible has loads to say about race. The entire Old Testament has two, the chosen people and the not-chosen people. Then there are loads of sub-tribes within those two groups that have the odd scuffle, some believing to be more superior than the others and then discriminating and enslaving.

I compared race to sexuality because, in my opinion, they are both things that are beyond choice or free will. One could no more force oneself to be another race than become another sexuality.

No I don't.. and I'm not sure what that has to do with the price of bread. .people who find punching the living daylights out of another person a sport are not people I have anything in common with and I wouldn't want to know them. . thank you very much..

Yes I know there is a load of old clap trap in the bible, but Evander believes some thing from that source and as with every religion and the people who practice it, they pick and choose which parts they believe and which parts they ignore. From that basis he was making a statement of fact(to him). However ridiculous that belief maybe to us, he wasn't  name calling or using a degrogatory term to describe homosexuals, he wasn't asking converting anyone to an anti gay stance.

Thanks Ollie, as I said I don't have a clue what is the bible.

But you don't have to call someone names, be abusive or derogatory to discriminate. In essence, he was saying that gay people need to be fixed in order to be something else, something worthy of God's love. Evander is not inclusive in his faith so as far as I'm concerned that is discrimination. He's perfectly entitled to hold his view just as White Supremacists are, but they are quite rightly challenged on their their words and behaviour.

Love thy neighbour is exactly that, accept other people's existence and concentrate on your own. His belief was pulled up by BB, and it challenged him by warning him about it.

suzybean

What annoys me about BB is they didn't explore the debate on the subject and they had a really good chance to do something good. .after all they felt the need to show it but then nothing... I wish he had said his comments to someone who had the balls to debate his beliefs with him to educate him and anyone else watching with similar views.... but oh no we got Luisa.. and a quick warning.. then ball bags and penis's for the rest of the show. .

Mount Olympus *Olly*

I not quote because it's becoming unwieldy...

Yes I find it at odds with Christian teachings that  we are made in god's image, but god made a few mistakes that need us to fix them..I don't know how Evander would reconcile that conflict, probably the devil's work argument I suspect.

However to state that he believes it can and should be fixed, probably from a caring stance of 'helping' some one come to the lord,I cannot see as discriminatory, stupid? yes

eh? neither do I and I was force fed Catholicism for the first 16 yrs of my life until I was deemed old enough to make up my own mind whether I wanted to continue with it or not. .needless to say I didn't but I was left with the bleedin guilt thing they scared us with as young kids back in the day..

I failed my compulsory RE CSE too and it was pretty hard to fail a CSE.. the only thing me and my mate did with the bible in RE class was read it as instructed but, we'd substitute words beginning with certain letters with other words that began with the same letter  [naughty ones] which made it a lot more interesting to read and a lot funnier.. that is about as much bible knowledge that I have

Evander could have had it out with BB, but he took his warning like a pro and went back in the house. If he had real courage in his conviction then he would have told BB that he felt he said nothing wrong, would not be moved on this matter, where to stick their warning, given them back his fee and gone home.

But i guess we all have our price

suzybean

tbh Suzy Evander comes across to me as someone not very well educated.. or maybe his brain is mashed from all that fighting . I don't get the feeling he could put an argument across very well beyond the initial attempt he made at explaining his weird beliefs.. he can't seem to string a proper sentence together.

Mount Olympus *Olly*

I'd say his beliefs were more outmoded than weird. It wasn't so long ago that homosexuality was de-criminalised in the UK. I don't think he's stupid either, I actually think he's quite smart to have got to where he is.

suzybean

Yeah Suzy outmoded is probably a better word...

He may not be thick but I struggle to understand what point he is trying to make when we've seen shots of him talking at other times ..   mind you I struggle to find the correct words nowadays or to put forward a better structured and knowledgeable argument like some of the posters on here, you included, so maybe it's an age thing. .
