Because the neoCons made Bin Laden into the boogie man, and a large part of the American public have bought into that. Therefore they're celebrating because they think the boogie man is dead.

As far as a lot of Americans are concerned he was worse than the boogie man. He was real. If they want to stand outside the White House and sing....good on them.

Cagney

It's good they've killed him and dumped his body out at sea. If they'd captured him, there would have been no end to the hostage-taking and demands for his release.

Now there can be no site for his followers to make pilgrimages to.

Although Donald Trump won't be pleased. He'd have probably liked the body brought back to the States, paraded through the streets and then stuffed and put on display at Trump Tower.

But where did they get his DNA from in the first place?

The Telegraph says "Osama bin Laden's body was identified by US authorities by matching a DNA sample to one taken from his late sister's brain, according to reports".

Not only did Bin Laden's actions cause the deaths of thousands of innocent people, the global aftershocks after 9/11 led to people losing their jobs and businesses. If people want to celebrate that the scum has had a sticky and undignified demise, there's nowt wrong with it. He celebrated when he caused the similar demise of thousands. I hope the bastard burns in hell

My only real problem with the celebrating is that some Americans (not all, by any means) seem to see Bin Laden's death as "closure" and think it's all over now.

If only it were that simple...

( Not really of course, it would launch a 1000 retaliatory suicide bombers ). But thats how I feel.

Chances are there will be a 1000 retaliatory suicide bombers, anyway. I don't think people are naive as to what may happen now, but I'm still glad he's gone.

A friend of mine is in Times Square at the moment and he went and saw the crowds just after it was announced. From what I can gather by his status updates the people he was talking to do not think that's the end of it, some think it's just the beginning.

I don't know about the lot outside the Whitehouse as I didn't have a Foreign Correspondent in the area at the time

You could hear people on the early news reports clearly say "it's over now". Similarly, my comments about "closure" come from direct quotes on the BBC website.

It's not a majority view by any means, and I think the reality is starting to dawn on a lot of the early celebrators...

Not arguing that at all, EL Some people will be thinking that's it, it's over, I saw someone saying all the troops should be called back, etc. I can completely understand the euphoria though, especially for those families who have lost people at the hands of his decisions. I don't know if anyone's been to Ground Zero, but I went 4 years after 9/11 and that's what really brought it home for me. Just the feeling of the place, it's unexplainable but anyone I know who's been has said the same thing. I just have memories of watching those poor people stuck in those towers and not being able to escape, knowing they were going to perish, did they deserve that? Regardless of who was or wasn't involved in the terrorism that had Bin Laden's name stamped on it, he played a part in those deaths and brazenly celebrated them. I had not one iota of 'respect' for him when he was alive and I show none in his death.

Well it seems there's already a replacement. Ahhh I dunno, the whole thing just stinks. The amount of soldiers who have died fighting, the amount of innocent civilians on both sides who have died.....yet the ones organising it have been able to live a comfortable life for years protected by the idiots who risk their lives for them. It's just shit :/

And as far as I'm concerned that applies to all sides involved.

A lot of people feel the same. But was there this amount of news coverage and statements from the Whitehouse back then? (Can't remember). Admittedly I would have liked to have 'seen' more evidence than a badly photoshopped pic. I know the hanging of that other bloke (big hair horrible one) was macabre but it proved he was gone. Hmmm.

Agree. Don't get me started on the union of Blair and Bush. Pair of shifty looking dickheads. I wouldn't trust them with my kettle let alone running a country.
