I work in a school kitchen and we finish for easter next thursday, the cook has just told us that she wants us in 1/2 hr early on thurs to do the cleaning we normally do on friday.  Now i am not happy about this, we will not be getting extra pay plus on the following tues we go in for a cleaning day!

She says she's treating thurs as a friday but we do extra time on a fri for cleaning but we are off so she wants us in on thursday for cleaning then on the following tues for more cleaning!!! I cannot see the point all for no extra pay!!  I phoned the manager above her and he thinks she's not being unreasonable! so i got nowhere there.

I know its only half an hour but she's cleaning mad!!

What do you all think am i being unreasonable!!

Are you being paid less because you're not in on Friday? Because if you're getting the same money, I can't see what the problem is. You are already being paid a bit extra for coming in half an hour early to do the cleaning - what difference does it make what day you do it?
Demantoid i think you are missing my point!  We do three hours on a Friday and two and a half hours on mon to thurs - the cook wants us to do three hours on the thursday but not get overtime just to do cleaning!!  but we are in for a day in the holiday - tues - to do two and a half hours of cleaning!!

any clearer

I think the point is that Friday is Good Friday, and thus a public holiday. The half hour extra time surely becomes null and void. Any overtime worked on the Thursday should be paid as overtime.
I just don't see it.
If she currently comes in early one day a week to clean (and is paid on that basis) what difference does it make if she does it a day early? She's not being asked to work a bank holiday, unlike many of us!
Maybe it would be fairer if her bosses told her not to come in and clean, then deducted half an hour's pay - since she would be working half an hour less than normal, as well as getting Friday off.

I think that you would quite possibly be able to refuse to do the extra hour on Thursday if you kept strictly to the terms of your contract, but I really find it hard to believe that anyone would make an issue over an extra 30 minutes?  It does seem to be a bit jobsworthy, and I think you would lose any good will if you needed your employer to show you a bit of flexibility in the future.

That is indeed the gamble. However I noticed the term "When we were took over!" Does this mean that Duchess is now working for a privatised firm? If that's the case one has to fight the scum for everything one can get as they constantly re-tender and screw one down........ if I've understood this correctly.

I'm not sure if I got it right so please bear with me....If you work the 30mins extra on Thursday you won't have to go in on Friday for cleaning?.....If so go for it
we are off friday anyway the cook wants us to work thurs like a friday  even though we are in the following tues to do more cleaning its pointless to me

can this be clearer because we are off friday we should be only working 10 hours but she wants an extra 30 mins for nothing i know it sounds petty.  garage joe is the only one who gets what i mean

Well you did ask for opinions, but it sounds as though you're only interested in the ones which agree with you!  I do understand the circumstances, but I still think it is extremely petty to make an issue out of working for an extra half hour, whatever the circumstances.  Blimey, I'm just doing a mental calculation of how rich I would be if I was paid for the extra time I worked

I'm completely confused. .if you work in a kitchen surely part of your job is to clean up every day....

would be a bit skanky if you only cleaned it once a week..

plus if you are leaving the cleaning for 4 days undone.. ie going in on a tues to do it, won't it it be even harder work to clean it after sitting getting crusty for so long? get a head start Thursday and possibly get away quicker on Tues?

I don't get this 'I don't want to do extra bits and bobs' and the 'working to rule' rubbish.... I got paid 9-5 but had to make sure my work was done before I left.. paid OT was limited  but I still worked to get the stuff finished..  the customers would have been well ticked off if I just upped and went home at 5pm..  [I worked in a bank back then, can just see their faces if their loans/overdrafts etc were delayed all becos I was a clock watcher.. ]

phew that's a relief blizzie. . for a bit there I thought it sounded like my own kitchen

Still don't get the clock watcher peeps tho.. never did and never will.. and the ones that always say. .run to the union.. them buggers ruined our industry with all their demands and pricing us out of the markets.. oooh and I remember strikes causing me to have 2 hours [on top of the 2 or more it took normally] extra travel each way to work all because some bods got the sack for being found asleep at work and and and ........

oops am on a rant. .better stop before I get slaughtered.. tis a very 'red' place on here from what I read ..

I think, especially for low paid work, as I'm sure school kitchen workers will be, then asking for unpaid labour is a bit much, tbh.

If they begrudge them their public holidays off, then make sure the extra half an hour is never done on a Monday, or Friday, in future.

*** doesn't mention the fact that she was a Union Rep at the old Midland Bank, in years gone by ***
