I'm inclined to agree, if there was an election tomorrow, the Tories would win.  The Tories, with Lib Dem complicity, have successfully hidden the global/banking recession and replaced it with 'The mess the last lot left us in'.

The problem now is the Lib Dems are a busted flush, who are so unpopular with their former supporters that they've got to cling to this coalition for their lives.  Their hope was that AV would have returned approx the same number of Lib Dem MPs even with a much reduced vote share.  Under FPTP, they'll be crucified.

Cameron, by comparison can almost bait the Lib Dems into breaking the coalition, in the knowledge that the Lib Dems have nowhere to go and his party, backed by Murdoch's propaganda etc will probably win a flash election.

am inclined to agree with all of the above. get rid of any alternative by assimilating and destroying them. i know the liberals were never contenders but they did bring a little colour (and sometimes a conscience) to politics. i grew up in canada, the liberals have been annihalted there also.

BTW at least The English Hating Party...sorry, I mean the SNP, did well in Scotland so now that means they will have their long awaited vote to break away from the Union, and surely they will vote to split up the UK.

I think it would be good for them to stand on their own two feet at last, and we English can be our own country so that we can get our own identity which we seemed to have lost down the years.

NOW, just one problem remains, what to do with Wales.

Except they didn't, did they?  They didn't get a majority.

They're only in government with aid of the venal, careerist politicians of the Lib Dems.

It isn't as simple as the Scots having a referendum to leave UK voting yes and leaving. The referendum would NOT be legally binding and would need to be ratified by Westminster in order to give the Scots independence. Scotland only has 59 MP's and wouldn't have much clout in dividing up resources. There would be allot to work out what happens to the nuclear capability that is Scotland based would the rest of the UK hand over the nukes what about the army. No doubt the Scottish would claim Scottish regiments belong to them however many of the Scottish regiments contain English soldiers. What about the north sea oil which is in what would be Scottish territorial waters that was accessed though UK funds.

All these are things and many more would need much negotiation and in the case of the soldiers a new contract. If the terms were not favourable to the rest of the UK independance wouldn't happen referendum or not.  Course this would breed resentment in scotland but unless it come to civil war there isn't much else they could do.

Odds are Scotland would get it's independence but be given a share in the profits from the oil in north sea. Not be allowed nukes (I don't even think we would be allowed to give them to a new country UK would continue as England wales and northern island and keep things like UN permanent membership, EU membership etc.) If Scotland withed to join EU I guess it would need to apply. The Scottish regiments would go to Scotland but the soldiers would be asked to sign up to the Scottish army or transfer to another regiment.

I am not certain that the scottish would vote yes anyway think a no vote would win because it is unlikely the conditions of leaving would be presented to them and I am not sure how scotland would manage without english money.

One thing is certain it isn't just a case of having a referendum then drawing a line between England and Scotland and saying everything north of the border is ours now feck off

They still did alot better than Labour.

Whoever gets elected (or not quite elected) it's still a fairer and better system than AV would have been.

Hmmm, thats not what the leader of the SNP says....we'll see Katty.

The Tories in Scotland would never vote to break away from the union.

There is the issue of the Crown, many who support the SNP will not want to come out of the Union!

Labour will not support the referendum for Independance.

That is undeniable, but never the less, not enough.

Lib Dem voters and Labour voters voted against slash and burn economics

Only Tory voters voted for slash and burn.

What do we end up with?  Tory slash and burn.

The Lib Dems don't seem to be able to get their heads around why they're despised by centre left these days.
