I agree with Mathom, surely our apathy plays a part in letting people away with daylight robbery as much as anything. It shows the public we can't assume all is well. I reckon they'll be under more scrutiny than ever which is how it should be. Vote out the robbers, vote in some others and watch them like hawks.

Totally agree. I also feel, in this country, that we do not protest enough about injustices (and there are plenty in this country). When I say protest, I don't necessarily mean demonstrating, but protesting vocally as well as physically. We need to get off our backsides sometimes and show, whichever government is in power, that we will not put up with it. We just seem a rather apathetic lot. Rise up and let your voices be heard! Nod

A lot of people in this country know so little about politics that they probably wouldn't know where to start protesting. Me being one of them. I stroll along through life not batting an eye most of the time until something like this happens and I'm scrambling about on the phone to my dad hoping he'll help me understand. Sad but true.

Yeah, l'm the same with politics. I am not just talking about politics, but all sorts of injustices that go on in this country. You get the odd protest and campaign that runs, but not enough people get up off their backside and make their voices heard. Until we do, they will go on and on.

I agree with that. What I do find though and this is in no way putting anyone down is that a lot of people come on places like here to air thier views but do little about it in real life. "What's the point?" "It won't make a difference" are just 2 phrases commonly used. Most things now are done from the comfort of your own home. Phone votes, internet polls and petitions etc. I feel that people need to be seen to be heard Thumbs Up

If everyone took that attitude, nothing will ever get done. I think sometimes, the "powers that be" rely on people's apathy/laziness/confusion or whatever, knowing that they can get away with practically anything because hardly anyone will bother to complain/protest. Although, this expenses scandal has, perhaps, shown that people can care and protest if they want to. We need to do it more Thumbs Up

The apathy of the voters has given rise to the MP's thinking they could get away with all kinds of things.
Unfortunately we have 2 main political parties both of who have voters who will vote for them no matter what their policies are. So you get 'Safe Seats' everywhere. This gives rise to apathy from the politicians in those seats as they feel safe and secure knowing that no matter what they do they will get in next election.
How we solve this is another question.

There's a saying "we get the government we deserve" and I think that's pretty obvious right now.

And I agree with LL, as long as we are prepared to do nothing ~ nothing will change. Or be replaced by a different hue with the same policies.

Maybe someone should start up a Protest Party?
We certainly need leadership then I believe people would follow.

My local MP voted to keep expenses secret. Not seen his claims yet, but I'm sure they'll be interesting...

His constituency consists of one leafy, affluent area and one that's not so pretty or posh (where I live). Guess which bit he likes to hang around in, and guess which bit he hasn't visited since Tony Blair got in? Roll Eyes

I feel sorry for the handful of honest MPs out there - they do exist, but they're now tarred by association with all the other trough-snufflers.

I agree Deman. I think it's time for a list of MPs who stayed clear of the expenses fest.

Why would he want to keep expenses secret, unless he has something to hide?

There were a few mentioned in the paper the other day, surprisingly a large number of people regarded as too left wing to keep office. The woman we selected to be our MP was deselected but I know for a fact that she was honest.

He is at least as surprised to be yearning for Dave Nellist, a left-wing Miltant tendency Labour MP who was deselected by the Labour party in 1992 for his socialist views. While Nellist was an MP, he refused to draw his full salary, taking only the average wage of a worker in his Coventry constituency so that he "kept in touch with their concerns and problems. The very fact he limited his income gave him some idea of how they had to live their lives."

I agree with your neighbour. This will call for a radical change. All the rot needs to be weeded out and got rid of. New candidates will emerge, the face of Parliament will change considerably and the new MP's, (whoever they are), will have to be so squeaky clean and upfront in the light of recent events that we should end up with decent representatives.

However, to start of with, I think the electorate should stage a mass protest and just not vote at all this time round. If enough people refused to vote, or spoilt their papers, the message would soon come across!

Day 27. Still waiting for the Telegraph's take on the Tax circumstances of various newspaper proprietors

Why are you concerned about this, Joe? The papers aren't paid for out of our taxes, they're private companies.

It's well documented that various British businesses do not pay Income Tax like you or I.
They have billions salted away off-shore.
Amounts of money that render the MP scandal as meaningless.
Thanks for the plug.
