I would guess that the people going up to film the volcano and the people who are flying up to test the ash content in the air above us are prepared to risk their lives, whereas other forms of air travel whether it's the public or troops have to be banned because they would be putting others people's lives at risk.

Yes..... plus I wonder if they use prop planes....? Whatever, it is certainly causing massive disruption, and giving us a timely reminder of what globalization  really means and how ineffectual we are against the forces of nature.

They just said on the news some smaller arlines are talking about laying staff off because they can't fly their planes.
If it goes on much longer, and it seems likely, then I don't think it will be just the airlines laying off folks. And what about those poor farmers etc. in third world countries who rely on us buying their fruits, vegetables etc....
