Gawd, the drama round here ... youngest gets an email from her second choice uni this morning to say she hasn't got a place.

Floods of tears from her.

Then her first choice phones and asks if she has her results yet, when she said no he said he would call back in a couple of hours.

She goes to school for results expecting the worst, she gets BCC, which I think is great.

We are now waiting and waiting and waiting for this bloke to phone back.

Anyone else getting results today?

Awwww Rexi - I remember it well. I loved those days

Fingers crossed for you and your girlie - Please let us know.

As an aside - I bought my grandsons school T shirts and trousers. Jack starts school in September for the first time. I just got him to try them on and .....he won't take them off - awwwwwwwwww  They grow up far too quickly.

Great results by the way

Yeah..   exactly the same sketch in my house today.    I was an hour late for work this morning cos I didn't dare leave Ickle til she had stopped sobbing her heart out.

She didn't get the A she needed for Imperial (hardly surprising considering she had the revolting Englebert throat/GF relapse thing going on on the run up to the exam).

Her insurance offer is fine though...   and UCL is a damned fine university, and her accommodation plans are not affected etc.   Its not like she is having to go through clearing or anything

Trying to reason with them that though disappointing, its really not the end of the world, and in fact there is still plenty to celebrate...   I was flitting between comforting & sympathising & lecturing & telling off this morning.

I am so glad that on this day next year I won't be doing the anxious parent thing!

The scary thing about her going to UCL is that term starts at beginning of Sept (unlike Imperial.. which starts at beginning of October).

So she was sobbing "I am not ready to go in two & half weeks"   and I am saying "course you are, plenty of time, it will be fine" (whilst thinking "I AM NOT READY FOR YOU TO GO IN TWO & HALF WEEKS!"

UCL Ditty - that's fab Well done to Ickle

My daughter's first choice phoned her back and offered her a different course at a different campus - which wasn't good, so she said she'd think about it.

Then she found the course that she wanted through clearing, but they said she had to formally decline the first choice's new offer before they could give her a place.

It took us 30 minutes on three phones to get through, but we finally did it. She's got to wait till 5 pm for UCAS to update her status - but it's looking good.

So, there are still some Is to be dotted and Ts to be crossed, but she is now a happy little bunny.

I need a lie down

Rexi

I could have been secretly hoping she'd take a Gap Year and stay at home sooz

But,seeing her little face light up when it all came together I am really happy for her.

And, on the upside, my house will remain tidy all day, and I won't have to restock the fridge all the time or stay awake till 4 am to make sure that she get's home okay from a night out in Oxford.

Rexi

awwww, am glad she's sorted Rexi

I get the gap year wish..    but its a mixed blessing, its hard watching them, watching all their mates on FB getting on with their lives at uni whilst they are still at home...   PLUS.. at the end of the gap year is another A Level Results day.. and they don't get much easier for the extra year

Am not looking forward to Ickle leaving me (again)..    thankfully this time we have her cat as hostage..    it was a cunning plan letting her have that kitten..   she now has emotional ties, stronger than the ones she has for us, that will bring her home on a regular basis

I can see me posting cute pics of the cat..   or mock pics of the cat pining for her.. all over her FB wall

*goes to brush up photoshop skills*

ahh, what a day for the pair of you! Glad all appears to be well!

None of that drama this neck of the woods..my niece went to secondary school when she was 11, so didn't make the cut in terms of age for her chosen course ( same thing happened with me with the same course! Family tradition! ) - she's doing a year portfolio-building rather than going back to school ,

Yep - she won't be 17 in time though ( her class were mostly about 10 months older than her)

So glad your daughter got sorted Rexi A scary day for all I'm sure

I had no child of my own going through it this time (thank god), but I had to go into work. Luckily we only had one student who had to go through clearing (although I was gutted about which student it was ).

The hardest part of the day was when the Y12's came in for their AS results. There were a handful who had failed practically everything...and so had to be told they couldn't come back. Lots of tears from students and parents alike.

There were happy bits to the day too. One student who I was convinced wasn't coming back....managed to pass 3 out of 4 and surprise us all. He's one of my faves so that was my highlight of the day. He failed my subject though... the barsteward

How did I not know this?

whoops!!

oh hell!   I haven't updated my parents on this bit of news either!   hahahaha!

best do that in the morning

And to think....I told Duds about it earlier cos I was worried about you.

Not that he was very sympathetic..... he wanted to know what it was she had to do that would take her longer than two weeks to organise.   There was me thinking about a mother and daughter being ripped apart, and he was thinking kettles and cutlery.

Good job you weren't here today Ducks ... I'd have chewed your ear off

I got cross with my friend who phoned tonight, who is Head of Biology at one of the posh establishments round here. She phoned at about 4 pm to ask about littlest ... I launched into 'how dare you be working today - don't you realise where your responsibility lies ...' etc.

She laughed

kettles & cutlery are all sorted!

its girl stuff - clothes, shoes, hair,...   and back here she has to start encouraging the cat to rely on us lot as opposed to Ickle being the centre of her world.

Oh & she has her room to tidy

and...   she promised she would buy a cat litter tray with a roof, and enclosed one...   so I don't have to deal with the cats liberally thrown litter all over the carpet

Awww..... I'd have been here if I'd known Rexi

Ducky

I dunno about that Rexi..     I think in some cases its cruel to be kind to tell them at AS level to cut their losses, rather than them struggling away and wasting another year...

A Levels are so bloody hard, and lower sixth is way easier than the A2 year...   if they can't hack year 1 they are really going to struggle during year 2.

And I am not just saying this cos my daughter has got through it..    my boy is bright, but I am a long way from convinced that this is automatically the road he should go down.

there are other options other than uni..      not as many as there should be - but I do think some kids do sixth form cos they think its the only way they can have a decent career, when there are other ways of doing it

You're forgiven ... but give those poor AS students another chance - you have the ability to redefine their future

It's not my decision Rexi

There are all sorts of complicated funding issues which make it impossible for us to do it...... but Ditty summed it up quite nicely. For their own sake, it would be wrong to let them continue (in the vast majority of cases).

You do get the odd one though, where you think it was just because they chose the wrong set of subjects.....rather than laziness. Those are the ones you wish you could do something for.

Ducky

Awww! Well done all around here for GagaStudents!

I was talking about this to a good mate today as her nephew has got into the place he wanted to. The same place as his dad went. Imperial, sorry Ickle.  But UCL is no mean achievement I tell you!  What's more, you're more bang slap as near to the best clubs in London you could wish to be!

I also pointed out that wherever you land up the friendships you make there you would never have had otherwise.

My baby bro ended up at Warwick where he met his wife and who gave me two beautiful nieces. (Bit peed off they emigrated to Oz though!)  He'd been told to apply to Imperial too!
