Day 1 of Big Brother 2009. The housemates are waiting, the VT’s are rolling and the first 2 housemates are inside the Big Brother House. Davina McCall is on the stage, having just turned around apparently unaware that we’re on because she’s so engaged in two stranger’s meeting for the first time. “oh, sorry, are we on?! God I’m just having SUCH a good time! Anyway, let’s meet housemate number 3!”
Ah. Housemate number 3. We all know what’s coming. For the past three series of Big Brother, housemate number 3 has always been the obligatory glamour girl. Usually blonde, usually a bimbo and often a bit of a bitch. And so enters Sophie Reade, yes she seems to tick all of those boxes! This particular choice is normally out within a few weeks. Whether it’s because she’s not got a lot about her, because she’s been a bit of a slag, because she’s been a cow or in some cases (i.e. Stephanie of BB9) because the public haven’t really given her a chance. And then what happens? But this housemate doesn’t really care. She’s only gone onto Big Brother because she wants to get into Zoo, Nuts and if she’s really lucky FHM.
Now, for the first few weeks of Big Brother, it looked like things could go this way for BB10’s Sophie. After just a few days in the house she finds her man, curly haired, indie style Kris. For the next few weeks they parade their romance around the house with the usual, “does he like me?” “should I go for it?” drama. Everyone on the outside of course knows that it will last. Of course it will. At least until the magazine deals dry up. Then it’ll end. Of course it’ll end on the front of heat magazine with the two of them saying how they were used and abused and probably rating each other out of 10 in bed. Ah, true love.
So Sophie & Kris were this year’s BB romance, predictably they would probably face eviction against each other at some point and she would probably go. After all she’s the girl and in Big Brother world the girl is always the bitch while they boy is the hotty. So we get to Week 5 and along with Siavash. Marcus and Halfwit, Kris & Sophie face eviction. Sophie thinks she’s going. Kris thinks Sophie’s going. Will he be a good boy on the inside while Sophie’s chatting with OK (oh wait, no one’s watching anymore are they? Scratch that last bit) while Sophie’s out partying? Well we’ll have to see how it’s edited won’t we? But hang on, what’s going on here. Davina’s read out Kris’s name. Surely this can’t be right? He’s the boy. He should stay. That’s the rule! Well this year on Big Brother the rules changed as it seemed that there was a possibility that Sophie Reade was... wait for it... genuinely liking Kris! No? It can’t be! A glamour model without a motive. Rubbish! Well I did just say it was a possibility. But for some viewers, they decided to change the natural way of Big Brother by booting out Kris who turned out to be one massive knob and in their last week together it appeared that there was a chance Sophie wasn’t quite as savvy as we thought. Maybe she wasn’t the girl who just wanted a magazine deal? Okay, no, she still wanted a magazine deal. But maybe she genuinely liked Kris as well. And maybe she thought he genuinely liked her. This girl doesn’t understand the way Big Brother works and is obviously naive to the fact that Kris used her to get a magazine deal and probably thought she was in on the whole act as well! Maybe our Soph did “really like” Kris.
So Kris turned out to be a massive knob and was voted out. Surely it’s only a matter of time before Sophie follows. Okay, she turned out not to be a cow, she’s now the quiet girl who will still sooner or later be subjected to the female hating vote won’t she? Well actually, not quite yet. Because first the public have to deal with Aggressive Scot Karly and more importantly this feisty Noirin who seems to have everyone wrapped around her little finger. So fast forward a few weeks. Sophie’s still in the house and is doing okay despite Kris being gone. This time however, she doesn’t have a role. She isn’t restricted by Kris and being part of a couple. She seems to be a lot more happy and she’s not having to comply to the stereotype that she’s been given. But as the girl’s numbers are starting to twindle surely Sophie will soon be out of the house and onto the front page of Zoo?
Well actually, she’s turning into a surprising favourite! In the latter half of the series we’re seeing a real girl. She’s broken free of her glamour girl image and her conversations aren’t about the way she looks or her romance with Kris. Could this be the real Sophie? She’s actually incredibly funny and is in a strange way rather witty. She seems to be a lot more caring than any of the others and genuinely cares. She can laugh at herself and the fact that she’s put on weight. And after realising what he’s like, she’s given Kris the boot! Yay! She doesn’t seem to be this plastic, bitchy, boring girl that we thought she would be, and that to be honest, she was at the start of the show. Probably under the assumption that this is the way she has to act and under the glare of Kris did act. She seems like the kind of girl we’d all want to be our friend.
The real Sophie has shone through, she’s loving and caring. She’s very funny and I just get this sense that she’s transformed from what we expected her to be and what she was trying to be and with the her hair falling out and her meals getting slightly larger she’s realised that, the Sophie she was trying to be isn’t as attractive as the real her. Through her relationship with Kris it went from something we all thought was for the magazine deals (and to be honest, she probably did as well) to something that showed us that Sophie was actually really into this guy and naively thought he was too.
I hate using the cliché of “they’ve been on a journey” in Big Brother. It’s something that will probably be said a lot on tonight’s show, but I doubt if it will be said about Sophie. For me though, this is the girl who has gone on the biggest transformation of becoming herself and not trying to be something else. So I say, give the nice girl the prize. She’s a lovely, down to earth girl and I know she’s my winner, so let’s make her the official winner! Go on, call 09016 16 16 15 and make Sophie this year’s winner!
