I was rushing round my house trying to find my hospital file because I was on my way to my big scan to find out the sex of my first baby. Just as I was ringing my taxi my dad called me in to see the story in the news. Like a few other people I thought it was some sort of tragic accident and although horrific I just got my coat on and went to my appointment. Came back brimming with excitement when my dad told me exactly what happened. We tried ringing the family I used to stay with in New York when I was a kid on summer visits but couldn't get through for days.
It was my sisters wedding 3 days later and she asked thata few minutes silence be held at teh reception for the ones who lost their lives.
I was in the office crazy mad worried about my sister who was in NY that week. Eventually she phoned at about 9pm. I then had to phone the rest of the family and the families of the other five grils she was with.
I had the day off work and went to a retail park to do some shopping. I went into a electronics store to look at TVs and PCs and all the staff and some customers were all gathered by the TV section and I thought 'what the bleeding hell are they up to?' I went over and saw the first tower collapse on the screens. I went home to watch the rest of the day on TV. So shocking.
Does anyone else remember Tony B Liar and Monkeyboy Bush calling it 'The War Against Terror' (or T.W.A.T) for the first 48 hours, until someone must have given 'em a nudge, then all of a sudden it was 'The War On Terror'?
I think that's my favourite historical fact ever.

I'd been off work with a bug, but was feeling a bit better so I went into town (Cardiff) to do a few errands.
In one shop, the radio was on and I heard something about a plane hitting the WTC. It "just" sounded like a light aeroplane accident.
A short while later, I was in Virgin Megastore (those were the days ) and Virgin FM was full of news about the second plane hitting.
When I got outside, our local evening paper had already put together a four-page emergency issue to break the news. I grabbed that, legged it home and when the OH got back from work, I was still sitting in front of CNN/News 24, where I'd been all afternoon and evening.
The pair of us stayed up till after midnight, watching it all unfold.
The only other thing I did that day was ring my mum - it was her birthday.

It was my uni days and I was at working at a call centre. A collegue was on the phone to the southern office and someone told her, she told our table and it spread from table to table around the centre then one of the fellas jumped up and ran out. His sister worked in the WTC It later turned out she was ok.
I phoned my Mum, my Dad, my sister, my brother and OH and told them all I loved them, there and then because I thought this was the start of something world wide. I came home from work and sat in front of the tele all night with OH.

Same birthday as my Mum Toid. Happy birthday to your Mum. Mine will be having a wee sherry in heaven today.
I was taking care of my Mum on that terrible day. One of her neighbours came to the door breathless, asking if we had seen what was happening? We hadn`t. We turned the tv on to see the second plane hit the tower. It was shocking...difficult to comprehende.
I remember the day quite clearly, I was at college at the time and on a break so me and my friend was shopping in town and people where standing still watching the TV Screens at Dixons, so me and my friend being the nosey parkers, stopped and saw the first tower on fire, then the second plane flew into the other building, everyone was so quiet.

Thanks, Scotty and sorry about your mum - mine's 64 today
My OH was in work when it happened and everyone watching it on the office telly assumed it was accidental. Then they saw the second plane hit - and everyone instantly knew it wasn't.

I was working in my office, my computer then had a TV tuner, I used to have the TV shrunk to the size of a matchbox while I worked, watching inane afternoon programmes. My secretary was off ill, she phoned me and told me to switch channels, I enlarged the TV and watched the horror unfold. Over the days work went out the window as I was glued to the TV.

Scotty - looks like your Mum was ill at the same time as mine - am I right?
If so -
If not, what the heck, have a hug anyway
I was off sick from work and lying on the sofa when I happened to turn sky news on just after the first one hit. I rang the guy i was going out with and told him to turn on the news just before the second one hit, we just kept saying OMG for about 5 mins after that. Watched it untill bed time in disbelief.
As an alternative....
On 11 September 1973, the government of President Salvador Allende was overthrown by the military in a coup dâÃĐtat.
President Allende died during the coup; the cause of his death remains disputed.
A military junta took control of the government However the head of the Chilean Army being the oldest branch of the military, originally founded in 1810 was determined to be the first of the co-rulers, a role that was never surrendered to the other military leaders of the country as it should have been. Thus General Augusto Pinochet assumed power after deposing President Salvador Allende, establishing a military government that ruled until 1990.
Subsequently tens of thousands of Chileans were murdered, tortured, went missing, or escaped into exile.
I was at University and can remember how vexed everyone was. Not as vexed as when this country had the ability to arrest Pinochet as a war criminal and let him go.

lol, thankoo!
I was in bed with major flu. Hadn't been able to keep my eyes open but had the telly on. The telly stopped. It took over the channel. I never slept after that. It was quite surreal watching it happen. When the 2nd tower was hit I couldn't stop myself crying. Didn't stop for a few hours.
Strange that isn't it? I knew nobody there but cried as if they were close friends

absolute truth, we had a student at the college who was sent home at lunchtime, it even made the local news.
I don't know if that was a total myth, but I remember one of the TV stations being told off for using old footage of cheering people to make it look as though they were celebrating.

It angers me the amount of blatant anti-Muslim propaganda people will fall for
With no disrespect at all to the families who lost someone, it was a terrible event.
Was watching Sky News, when in flashed on screen
I was at work, in an office on my own. My husband phoned me just after the first plane crashed and told me about it. Took me a few minutes to properly comprehend what he was saying. At first I thought it was some sort of a joke!
I went through to one of the other offices to tell them, only to find that the rest of the building's inhabitants were huddled round a wee 5" portable tv watching events - and no-one had told me!

Was on way to hospital to see my daughter, when heard snippets on the radio, breaking news, unconfirmed reports etc.By the time i got on the ward everyone huddled round tv,a while later we saw the second plane hit,but i thought it was a replay of the first hit.
My daughter had lost both of the twins she was carrying, and in hospital to have them "removed"so sad day every year.

I had just put the phone down~ that Tuesday lunchtime and I happened to have SKY news on the TV
I saw it all right from the start and continued to do so till very late that night
I sat here in shock as it all unfolded~ it seemed surreal ~ and it seemed like some blockbuster American Movie
It was devastating to watch it
~ and the horror to see the first tower collapsing ~ was just too much to take in
and then the first tower that was struck [North ] ALSO crashed straight down too
I was hoping that all the people nearby and the twin tower office workers and firefighters managed to survive ~ this living nightmare

Exactly like that. I think that was probably the desired effect? I certainly thought so at the time.

i think you'll find that was certain news organisations showing old footage from palestine and claiming it was cheering crowds.
as i said it wasnt hearsay, we had a boy at the college i was on about and he was sent home for the reasons i gave in my earlier post, obviously i cant vouch fo5r any other incident, but lets face it, its not likely that in the whole of the uk that was the only incident of its kind so to claim that every mention of any incident is a myth or anti islamic is just not true at best and an attempt to whitewash the facts at worst.
I was at home and a friend called and said turn on the tv. I did and like most around the world sat glued to it as it unfolded feeling absolute shock and disbelief. At times it felt like I was watching a disaster film, so hard to believe it was real.
Something I'll always personally remember is the next day - when they were still showing the footage over and over again of the planes hitting the tower and I still felt numbed by disbelief - suddenly a camera crew zoomed in on the hundreds of tons of rubble many feet deep that apparently spread for miles as I later learnt. The camera showed a close up of passport lying on top of all the rubble. There was no damage at all to it, it looked as if new. The passport was said to be in the name of a Muslim. I don't know why but in the second it was as if I came out of the numbness and "woke up". My mind went into question mode. Why wasn't the passport damaged/burnt like everything around it in the chaos. How come the cameras came across it in all the acres of chaos. Personally it's when I had the thought, something is wrong with this scenario.

I remember the day well.. I watched the news coverage in disbelief. I was worried about my friend Piers. He died that day.
I had been out shopping, and strangely I remember the weather was like it has been today.
Whe I walked back into the flat we were living in at the time, my boyfriend, who became my husband, said that a plane had gone into one of the Twin Towers in New York.
I am still ashamed of what I said next in light of what happened, because he is somewhat of a joker, I said ok what's the punchline. He said no punchline, look and Sky News was on.
I stood in the middle of our living room rooted to the floor watching what was happening and the reports about the Pentagon and they thought that the White House was being attacked as well.
I remember seeing the live footage of the second plane hitting the second tower and actually crying out loud this is not happening, we are watching a disaster film and feeling sick because I knew it wasn't and what I was watching was real.
My mum was on the phone when the first tower collasped and we both cried out together, not believing what was happening.
Seeing footage of that plane going into the second tower makes me feel sick to this day.
RIP to all who lost their lives 8 years ago today
May all who lost people 8 years ago today one day find a kind of peace.

OMD's Tupps thats awful
I went to California the next year and met a fella who'd been off work that day for a hospital appointment, every single one of his colleague's died that day.. he packed up his stuff a week later and moved to the mountains in San Bernadino, California. I'll never forget the look in his eyes as he told that story, chilled me to the bone. He's never gone back to that kind of lifestyle...he makes his living working in kids summer/winter camps now.
I was mid-air on the way to Majorca with a group of friends. When we arrived and transited through arrivals and baggage no-one said anything about it to us. It was only when we arrived at the apartments we were told. It was like a dream... a joke.
I can't tell you how frightening it was to be away from home from family and friends at that time... when airports all around the world were shutting up for who knew how long at the time.
We all spent so much of that week watching the news.
A friend of mine observed that when we left all was right with the world for us. We were just off on holiday. When we arrived the world had changed for ever. Awful events.

Only a few months earlier I had been to his lavish gay wedding... and been up the tower for a drinky poos with him and his fella. Piers was a force of nature.. he was like Alan Carr.. he used to make me howl with laughter.
His Mum emailed his friends to say he had been lost.. and the worst thing was that he wasn't meant to be there at that time that day.
It reminds you how you can be taken in a second.
