It has been confirmed today that the actor Rutger Hauer passed away on Friday at the age of 75, following a short illness.

He was known for many film and TV roles, but perhaps most famously for that of the replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner.

RIP Rutger, mostly one note, but that particular note was epic.
Although the BBC article mentions Hauer's breakthrough role in the 1969 Dutch TV series Floris, it doesn't mention that it was Paul Verhoeven who directed it. Verhoeven and Hauer would go on to make a number of films together in the 1970s which brought Verhoeven international recognition before he went to the States along with Hauer though Hauer wasn't in any of Verhoeven's famous/notorious American films.
Hauer continued making films to the end. I don't know if he had completing filming his last role but if he did, you'll get the chance to see it on BBC this Christmas in their version of A Christmas Carol where he's the Ghost of Christmas Future.
Very sad news.
Blade Runner being one of my favourite films, I am very familiar with his superb 'death soliloquy'. Great piece of cinema.
I don't know too many films he has been in apart from Hitcher and the terrible Hobo With A Shotgun (save yourself time and never watch it). I have recently picked up cheap The Legend of the Holy Drinker.
No doubt my eye will be drawn to some of his other work now.

Ladyhawke has always had a loyal following, and is definitely worth a look.
Personally; unless you haven't seen the TV series, I wouldn't bother with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On it's own it's enjoyable fluff, but there's a reason Joss Whedon was so desperate to completely redo it. It does illustrate Hauer's unsurprising knack for playing vampires, but it's perhaps most notable now for giving Hilary Swank her first movie role (she plays one of Buffy's schoolmates).

I think I have seen the Buffy film you mention, but so long ago I forget what it was like.
As usual, Radio 4's Today programme this morning included its religious slot "Thought for the Day". Giles Fraser today used EL's clip in his opening post as the basis.
His talk is of interest to anyone who finds that scene memorable. He also talks about Philip K Dick and also throws in William Blake. A fascinating item and will worth 3 minutes of listening time.
