IMO, the days of nursing (mental health and general) being a vocation are sadly gone. In my experience of surgical and medical wards, some are in out of the road of the buses.
Having said that, I do know two exceptionally lovely, mental health nurses (one of my DiLs and my cousin) who do try to make a difference.

Mental Health is such a complex issue
I've worked with people with enduring mental health issues
It's not like breaking a leg, mental health ebbs and flows, it's hard to grab hold of - suffers can be confused about it's nature or how to cope.
