Card payments are currently failing across the UK and elsewhere in Europe, Visa has said.

The extent of the disruption is not yet clear but customers across Europe have been complaining on Twitter that payments have been denied.

Barclays and Bank of Ireland advised customers to use ATMs to withdraw cash, which appear to still be working.

Visa said it was working as quickly as possible to resolve the situation.

The Payment Systems Regulator told the BBC it understood the problem to be limited to Visa card payments only.

Responding to customer complaints on social media, HSBC said there were issues with processing Visa payments, which were intermittent, but were "slowly recovering".

Sainsbury's also it was experiencing problems.

The news articles just refer to Visa card payments so presumably both. Mastercard and American Express cards aren't affected.

Money. Makes the world go round.

Me too, although I do use credit and debit cards, I'm not going contactless until I absolutely have to

I recently encountered my first cash-less shop: it was a place in the forecourt of Paddington Station which sells sushi (bento boxes and such-like) to go. They don't take cash at all: it's mainly contactless payments. Needless to say I've been wondering quite a bit over the weekend how they coped during rush-hour last Friday.

I used to get a lot of stick from my mates years ago for not using a credit card, but it was not that I refused to use one at all; I just refused to use it for everything. I'm not happy about the security behind a lot of electronic payment methods (justifiably-so IMO, given recent events) and have other issues with them too, but primarily I simply believe it's a good idea to have a wide range of payment options to fall back on.

I've still got a cheque book - something-else that's been mentioned a bit on the news in the aftermath of Friday. I recently fought some subtle (and not-so-subtle) attempts by my bank to discourage me from using it, and indeed I've even been trying to get my parents to get one again. It's not that I think it's the best payment method for them - it's not: it's just another useful alternative to have available in emergencies.

 I agree with you, Eugene.

Some of the annual maintenance bill get paid by cheque too!

Likewise with me. I still have the original plastic cheque book cover, still

I came across it the other day when I was looking through some boxed stuff for something or other

I too still have a chequebook though I rarely use it. And it's in the plastic cheque book cover I got when I opened the account back in something like 1970 or 1971.
