A bit of a personal one this, but I know there are other anime fans on the forum.

Isao Takahata, The Japanese anime director, has died at the age of 82. He was also a co-founder of the legendary Studio Ghibli - often referred-to as the "Japanese Disney".

As a director, Takahata was best known for "Grave of the Fireflies", however this little beauty is the film he got an Oscar nomination for:

When it comes to Studio Ghibli, the work of another co-founder, Hayao Miyazaki, is generally better-known (he directed the wonderful "Spirited Away", amongst others). However Takahata had his own distinct style.

A Chinese guy joined my team last year. He collects Studio Ghibli and we talk about it. I think you are right about Spirited Away, many people will have heard of it if they like film of some sort, and every so often Princess Kaguya.
