One of Google's more attractive doodles. Gertude Jekyll was a British garden designer. She was a friend of Robert Louis Stevenson who used her family name for his famous character.
My aunt had a ceramic egg holder in the shape of a chicken
They called it Gertrude

Quite often referred to in discussions between Baz, Yogi and myself.
Especially in the gardening thread.

It seems that it was one of Gertrude's brothers Walter who Stevenson named his character after.

That was one of my favorite Google Doodles of all time.
Also, you people are making me jealous with your chicken crockery. (Have I mentioned that I got a couple of (real) chickens this last summer? Now I'm all about chicken stuff....
The Doodle was created by the British artist Ben Giles for Google. If you want to see a larger version you can via his website:

You'll need to scroll the screen right to left to get to it.

Do the chickens have names?

Do they go cock-a-doodle-doo or cock-a-google-goo

Heh. You guys are so funny. I have two hens, named Biscuit and Poppy, and they don't make any cock-a-doodle-doo noises. They make cute little clucking noises, and they like to eat treats out of my hand. I should find a photo for you.

Aww, Biscuit and Poor sound cute. I hope you can find a pic
As a child, Mr Y had a chicken called Henrietta and a duck called Nelson.
Awww...great names! I also have 2 ducks, named Anna and Thomas.
Hereâs a picture of Biscuit (the reddish one) and Poppy (the black one).

Have you ever tried duck eggs
Gorgeous - if a little expensive (but i'm worth it)
You'll be reluctant to go back to hen's eggs

OH, yes. I was getting one from Anna almost every day, although that's dropped off. They are delicious!

Oooh why would it be regular then not?
Didn't realise no boys hen was needed for regular egg laying til recently
You're surely not alone, there.
Not sure what's up with her. Their pen has a cement floor, and sometimes she just dumps the egg right on the floor, breaking it. For some reason she no longer wants to lay an egg in her nesting box...every once in a while I get lucky, and get one that's not broken. The other day I had one break in my pocket.
I think I might not get chicken eggs until spring: in winter, if you want eggs, you have to put a light in their coop for 16 hours a day, or something like that, but that's not ideal for them, apparently. So, I'll wait patiently.
If the shell is weak you may need to increase the nutrients in the feed (he says as if an expert).
Can you not lay straw on the cement? I thought birds like that prefer to scratch around in the grass/dirt?
Yep, she has access to oyster shell, which is the calcium supplement.
I have straw and shavings in the pen, but it's a very large pen, and it would be hard to cover the entire thing (and require LOTS of much harder cleaning that it's getting...)
Also, they are only in the pen at night. Like the chickens, they are "free range", and the ducks like to swim in the pond (she's actually laid a couple of eggs in the pond before
In the pond!!!
Seems to me she knows your game
